Jimmy Fallon is afraid of losing his job. Is it time to retire the late night desk interview format? (archive.ph)

they will never retire it, it's one of the most effective propaganda tools.

the things that they say are normally pretty cringe, frankly not funny, and oftentimes completely wrong. but add a laugh track to it, and suddenly it becomes the most convincing shit. people love being part of the audience ridiculing whatever the TV man is ridiculing.

On cozi tv they show reruns of Carson and I absolutely enjoy watching them since I was in 6th grade when he retired so a lot of the jokes were over my head then. He was a democrat but did a good job of not attacking half his audience (the old republican but sneakers too mentality). With the current late night it’s simply “Trump is evil am i right?” Over and over again.

Gutfield is pretty much the only thing I watch on Fox News but be basically filled a void left by mainstream late night shows abandoning half their audience

Working people still go to bed at 11-ish, they still want some fresh but mindless content on the tv to wind down.

You'd have to work really hard to fail at the late-night talkshow format, and that's exactly what they've done by turning them into non-stop Trump hate.

Carson's Tonight Show was outstanding in its time, but for a 30-60 years out of date current events show to be more entertaining than any of the current crop is an absolute indictment of the today's shows.

Problem is working people are increasingly just not having Cable at all, due to both the price of it, the increasing work hours, and the flexibility streaming offers over it.

They can just throw on their favorite cartoon from their childhood, or mindless nonsense like Family Guy at any time they go to bed and get it for 10% of the cost of a cable package to watch Late Night Shows on. And even if those go on Streaming, its still a far bigger uphill battle to compete against nearly every show in existence versus "the literal nothing on of Late Night time slots."

You must be a youngster if you've never heard of rabbit ears!

People put a spare TV in their bedroom and watch broadcast because an extra cable box costs extra.

Tired at the end of the day, they don't want to have to pick out and line up a show out of nearly every show in existence, especially not one they actually like and might keep them up.

This. The only reason I ever watched those late night shows was because they were on broadcast, NOT cable TV. Problem is I don't watch TV at all any more. There hasn't been anything worth watching a decade. It's boomers keeping those shows alive now.

And since I mostly watch older stuff those free streaming services have endless libraries of old shows and YouTube has a lot of old obscure shows

They still sell antennas for local broadcast, it just looks like a flat board instead of rabbit ears.

Funny you say that, when Cozi started airing Carson reruns at night there was an article in the local paper about how in my area the Carson reruns were doing almost as well ratings wise as the actual current late night shows

The last time I watched Late Night tv was with Craig Ferguson.

It was absolutely the best thing on TV at the time.

Other than the boomers, who is even watching these cable shows anymore, anyone with a smart phone has millions of sources of entertainment

Or a Kodi box, a Roku, or a smart TV, The article mentioned how NBC was making "drastic changes to their lineup" and I had a moment of culture shock since I haven't thought about cable TV schedules for 15 years.
