I realise it’s not quite the same, but I can’t help thinking that it’s no surprise that a medical “industry” that believes it’s okay to chop off normal tits and dicks, etc., because teenagers feel that they are “in the wrong body”, only for them to regret it later, would also feel that this is “an acceptable sacrifice”, for the sake of sportsball…
I think it started with Hollyweirdoes normalizing bizarre surgeries like facelifts and botox.
Plastic surgery is great for accident victims and such, but boy was it abused for vanity. Then everyone started taking going under the knife lightly ...
There's a difference. Men are capable of admitting they're doing a bad thing.
Most roid user are honest about it and don't recommend others to do it.
Women just lie and pretend they haven't done anything at all and then out the other side of their mouths proclaim that all that shit is ok and encourage it
This is what happens when you make professional sports into one of the highest-paying careers. Even if it was just the Olympics, missing out for that length of time could have cost him millions in lost sponsorship deals and who knows how many potential career moves if there are scouts there. Every young athlete goes into pro sports with the mantra drilled into him that he has almost no time to make the most out of his career before he ages out and the money stops flowing.
Yeah, no you’re right. Field hockey in Aus is professional (i.e. we have a pro league), but their is no free-to-air tv rights, which is where the money is, so pay would be… Less than Women’s netball, or maybe even women’s rugby union, which is only semi-pro, lol…
Hockey is definitely still fairly niche here, and we’re like, world number 3 or 4…
Also regarding his “star” status, I had never even heard of him, and I technically went to school with our hockey captain (he would have been finishing up when I started, but still), and grew up playing it… So he’s not that big a name, imho, lol.
The fuck is wrong with him!?! Even if we had advanced cybernetics or could grow body parts, I wouldn't be chopping off parts of my body just to skip injury time.
Is this an Australia thing as I remembered how they tried to pressure Novac to take the vaccine to play and he refused siting he'd rather wait to get the title and record than risk his body to do so. He was at least foreign so could escape the prison colony so I can't imagine the pressure domestic athletes are under who have no escape.
They did a survey of Olympic athletes back in the 2010s asking if they would take a pill that guaranteed them a gold medal in their event, but would kill them in four years.
That's one hell of an unhealthy obsession. Dying for some silly status symbol. It's not like they saved their people, or developped a cure for some disease. Nope, bragging rights and a shiny medal.
Wait till they figure they all take the same pills and only one gets gold but they die 4 years later anyway.
You're absolutely missing the point. They have a completely different mentality than normal people, they're obsessed with being the best and they don't care what it takes to get there.
You think it's stupid because you haven't tried looking at it from their perspective.
he consulted a plastic surgeon and the medical advice was that it was so badly mangled it would not likely function even if they successfully made it look normal again
He was told it may not regain full function, which is quite different from being told it's not likely to function.
He urgently consulted a plastic surgeon who said that even with surgery to repair the finger - and the long recovery time - it may not regain full function
And knowing doctors, "may not" usually means "it probably will but I don't want to say that and be wrong so I'll play it safe."
Isn't Australia a state monopoly on healthcare? I would expect wait times beyond the Olympics even ignoring recovery time. Also a chance to win Olympic gold vs the top portion of a pinky. The OP is a fag and blatantly mislabeled the post or misunderstood the article when he posted about amputating a finger.
I think it is more like Britain where you are forced to pay in but you can pay extra for private treatment. Despite saying that I don't believe there is an NHS down under but a couple of "insurers".
You’re first sentence is the correct one. We do have an NHS equivalent (called Medicare), but this was likely done by a private surgeon, if indeed it was done in Australia at all, given how many of these athletes live overseas anyway…
I can think of maybe six or seven large private health insurers off the top of my head, but I imagine there’s more than that… It tends to be a state-by-state thing, though, so I know that two of the insurers where I am only operate here…
We have private healthcare, it’s just more expensive.
He most definitely could have gone to a private surgeon, and in all likelihood did, because, much though Medicare (equivalent of the NHS) has its problems, I don’t think very many public doctors would endorse this decision…
Ronnie Lott chopped off one of his pinky fingers back in '85.
So, Lott faced a decision from doctors: put a pin in his finger and a cast over it and wait eight weeks for it to heal, or amputate the tip of the finger off from the first joint up and be able to play right away.
Sure enough, Lott picked option B, amputation, and parted ways with his pinky. Doctors numbed it, sliced it off and put it in a cast.
It's a relatively dumb ambition to dedicate your life to win an Olympic gold medal. The window is small and the competition is fierce. Don't get me wrong it's inspiring as hell and I do admire those that get them, but you could put that dedication energy into a 1000 other areas (even sports related) and come out far better on average.

Yeesh.

I doubt one player on the Australian men's field hockey team is earning millions per year in sponsorships.
The article refers to him as a "star", so I guess it's possible I'm wrong, but I doubt it considering how few people care about field hockey.

Like 90% said yes.
That's one hell of an unhealthy obsession. Dying for some silly status symbol. It's not like they saved their people, or developped a cure for some disease. Nope, bragging rights and a shiny medal.

It's not about "bragging rights" it's about the culmination of their career. Proof that they worked the hardest and are the best at what they do.
It's the same motivation for people who end up curing disease, they worked the hardest and are the best at what they do.
What they do is the only difference.
Except if they're just taking a pill to get a gold, then it isn't about hard work, it's just about the medal.
You're absolutely missing the point. They have a completely different mentality than normal people, they're obsessed with being the best and they don't care what it takes to get there.

The people who get to the highest level are going to be the most obsessed.

I know someone who accidentally cut his finger off while using some tool. It was in a bad shape but he made it in time to get it reattached.
It dosen't ''work'' ( a non-problem 99% of the time since it isn't the thumb ) but his hand looks normal.

I know when I think of Australia, I think of... hockey.
Phoenix has a hockey team, though, so there you go.
We have private healthcare, it’s just more expensive.

It's his finger dude. Who knows.
Imagine doing this and not winning anyway.
Ronnie Lott chopped off one of his pinky fingers back in '85.
"God made a mistake, I was always supposed to have only 4 fingers on this hand."
Respect his decision to identify as a person of four fingers. Fucking bigots.
Doesn’t seem so illogical to me.
But we can clearly see the pressures men face when they decide to troon it and get a massive advantage.
