“Australian hockey ‘star’ amputates finger to play at Olympics” [because he didn’t want to wait for an injury to heal]…. I suppose this is the inevitable result of the sick society we’ve ended up with, but it’s still profoundly insane, that he made this decision and rationalized it thus… (archive.is)

That's one hell of an unhealthy obsession. Dying for some silly status symbol. It's not like they saved their people, or developped a cure for some disease. Nope, bragging rights and a shiny medal.

Wait till they figure they all take the same pills and only one gets gold but they die 4 years later anyway.

It's not about "bragging rights" it's about the culmination of their career. Proof that they worked the hardest and are the best at what they do.

It's the same motivation for people who end up curing disease, they worked the hardest and are the best at what they do.

What they do is the only difference.

Except if they're just taking a pill to get a gold, then it isn't about hard work, it's just about the medal.

You're absolutely missing the point. They have a completely different mentality than normal people, they're obsessed with being the best and they don't care what it takes to get there.

You think it's stupid because you haven't tried looking at it from their perspective.

The people who get to the highest level are going to be the most obsessed.
