Harvard's Claudine Gay is now teaching a course on Reading and Research (notthebee.com)

Harvard's Claudine Gay is now teaching an ethics course on research (for real). As a professor, I have thoughts on this historic...
This appears to be an actual course listing from Harvard University.

Talk about privilege.

Because of her I saw articles saying plagiarism isn’t so bad. All my life in school plagiarism was treated as a deadly sin but it’s ok for her. Pathetic

I've seen people getting instantly fired for plagiarism, but now suddenly is no big deal.

Black privilege, plain and simple. The Narrative can't afford to have one of their DEI pets suffer the consequences of their actions.

It's pretty pathetic and obvious when they hired her for being black. They seem to aim to torpedo their own sort of initiatives. I'm not sure if it's because of naivete.

It's because if there were black candidates who qualified for the position based on their merits, they would have already been hired for the job. Diversity initiatives are about hiring unqualified people by definition.

To be fair, competent blacks tend to be "house niggers" because they hate that their aptitude and hard work is called into question by AA and DEI, plus they usually got bullied by other blacks for "acting white." You won't be placed into prominent positions if you don't use your identity to push The Message.

But it's also true that some racial and ethnic groups simply have a higher proportion of highly intelligent people than others, so from a human capital standpoint restricting yourself to...undergifted communities...is like being a vegan chef.

You can bet that if a student is caught plagiarizing at Harvard he is expelled

Absolutely. It’s amazing how Harvard has totally ruined its reputation. I was born in 80 and even as a kid I knew it was considered a top tier school

Even back then, that was almost entirely narrative.

Harvard was top tier because they told you it was top tier so you would immediately be impressed when someone name dropped it.

And their "grads" were almost entirely the elite and rich buying their way through, the kind of people who had their success guaranteed regardless of education and college was just a field of nepotism with other future elites to forge political connections.

The actual school portion of it was a formality. It was just the top of society telling you how awesome and amazing they were any time its "reputation" was brought up.

True. As a kid I didn’t understand all that but I just assumed Harvard was top tier

I’m surprised Disney or Netflix hasn’t hired her to consult

Hey now, it does seem like reading other people’s research might be her only skill….

Yeah as long as she steals a course framework from a good professor I don't doubt she'll replicate it to the letter.

There is no win for Claudine Gay in this one.

The school has shown it will burn itself down to keep giving her a six figure job, and that’s assuming people keep on the pressure to actually make the burn-down happen. Assuming she’s completely shameless—and she is a black, female academic—I think there are a lot of scenarios that are wins for her here.

It's striking to me how the left has ridden the prestige of academia so hard that academia has become something of a joke even among many academics. There's so much trash that's been output by activist departments that are basically just glorified think tanks, and the only people who still treat academic credentials like they mean something are either activist hacks themselves who shove their credentials in your face at every opportunity, or midwit cheerleaders who don't even know what they're defending.

So it's quite something to see these people continuing to burn down the institution that gave them so much clout in the first place. Even the hard sciences have been tainted by fraud, overproduction of bad research, and activist meddling that blatantly places political sensitivities before accuracy. Nevermind all the "science journalist" scum who outright lie about what academics even believe, such as that biologists are at a consensus that race is just an arbitrary social construct, or that neuroscientists are at a consensus that there are no differences between male and female brains, etc.

Or more recently the way that the MSM treated the lab leak hypothesis as something that The Experts™ roundly reject, when several experts were speaking up about it at the time and being attacked by other experts who were terrified of the world finding out that their field was responsible for a biological Chernobyl. And even a lot of mainstream normielib hacks like Jon Stewart couldn't pretend not to see how absurd the whole thing was.

Once people stop taking academic credentials seriously, especially from liberal arts and social "science" majors, the left is gonna have a way more difficult time bamboozling normies into thinking that leftist ideology is simply what all the smart and educated people believe. They marched through the institutions and did a remarkable job of conning the intelligentsia into conflating their activist "research" with scholarship, and conflating "right-wing" ideas with ignorance and crackpottery, but they rode that shit so hard that they broke it.

Yeah, but do you think she cares about any of that? I suspect that any sting she’s feeling is in the blow to her ego and the reduction in salary and personal prestige. On an individual level for her, staying employed at Harvard is a win.

Apparently her salary hasn’t been reduced; she still makes the $900,000 a year she made as president.

This isn’t the kind of class that anyone will ever fail. This is some “check-the-box” requirement for all grad students regardless of major. It’s the sort of thing you can’t fail unless you no-show every class, and even then, you’ll probably get a gentleman’s C.

So you can be fired from Harvard and then hired at Harvard.

This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt they're not doing background checks and are only hiring based on skin color.

Because that's Gay.

Makes sense. She can refer to her own case as what NOT to do. This is very likely the Harvard version of the woodshed--"You got busted by outsiders, so you'll have to sit in the corner and teach undergraduates the Reading and Research course for a while. Composing the syllabus should help you overcome your own shortcomings and might be sufficient penance for a return to high-level administration.".
