The last The Sims game I played was the 2nd one back when it came out. I'm wondering if any are worth picking up or is this just my nostalgia making me want to revisit the series? I wanted to play something that is a change of pace from my usual games.

Picking up, no.
Pirating with all dlc. Yes.
Although iirc the new sinscity isn't even worth pirating compared to simcity 3000.
They're talking THE Sims not SimCity, SimAnt, etc.
But for Simcity, Cities Skylines has overtaken it although CS2 is apparently pretty buggy.
Your advice for pirating with all dlc applies for CS1 too. I bought it originally on Steam with a Humble Bundle then bought another HB with it again to get more DLC, in retrospect should have just pirated the whole thing.
Cities skylines 2's issues aren't the bugs, but the game design. Cars move around randomly instead of having a destination. Production chains don't matter. The simulation itself is wrong. In fact it's made to fool the player into believing there's a simulation where there isn't one. These aren't bugs: Paradox has stated that they won't change any of that.
Cities Skylines 1, in contrast, is a wonderful game (with mods). Watch some Biffa on YT playing the game to see what the gameplay is like with the popular mods.
That's pretty much Paradox games in a nutshell lol, it's one of the reasons why I got extremely fed up with Stellaris and that's normally the sort of game that would be absolutely my thing and I did buy the base game legally back in the day. I mean the games already have a reputation on steam so I don't really need to post that much about their DLC practices, but once you strip down things to the core gameplay you realise there's very little content there despite how many DLCs they pump out frequently.
One thing I found amusing about Stellaris, when I started poking at the 'AI' I realised it had the exact same behaviour as the modern Total War games. Where the code was constantly scanning your systems to find out which one had the least amount of garrisoned fleets in it and it would immediately make a bee-line for that as part of it's 'tactical decision making' so that meant that you had to perfectly micro-manage especially as your empire got larger to make sure that they couldn't slip one past you because they will since there's very little in the way of an early warning you can do.
Sometimes I hate knowing code, because it makes the design flaws of games so much more obvious. The joke is as well because of the way the A* Algorithms they're inevitably using works it's very easy to exploit the pathfinding and make them derp out and I did this in Warhammer once and it was incredibly amusing. To a lesser extent you can do this for example when it comes to games like Skyrim too by positioning yourself in front of a table and wiggle about to bork the NPC pathfinding. They just don't know how to design pathfinding properly anymore and that doesn't really require coding knowledge just a functioning brain.
No doubt brother.
Shit, I'm out of the loop on Sim city, when did they come out with a new one?
The last mainline was the disastrous 2013, though they did an MMO & mobile in 2014.
Cities Skylines is the new king of citybuilders. Last I heard the 2nd one was still buggy but the original is great. Once again you'll want to pirate w/ all DLC. The full game is >$300 Canadian (w a 9% discount) but that includes a bunch of radio stations- there's 11 major expansion packs that are $15-20 each.
The Sims 3 is great. It's the only game in the series with an open world. I found there was plenty to do with just the base game, but the DLCs add quite a bit. They're quite expensive if you buy them all at once but each one is decent value for the price. The Sims 4 ditched the open world and is infested with pedo shit. To make matters worse the DLCs have far less content but cost the same as the ones for 3.
4 has got a lot of the pride stuff, I remember the whole gender stuff in it and also now chopped off tits scars for men... Urg. Otherwise it's not a bad game if you pirate the dlc. I cannot recommend the base game or buying the dlc(for like 1k).
The problem with the Sims 4 is yes it's technically a 'game' but like most modern corpo slop titles it's nothing more than a vehicle for micro-transactions with barely any gameplay about. You may think that's weird but honestly compared to the older Sims games the gameplay loops are remarkably basic and the Sims wasn't even that much of a complex game to begin with.
You pick your career after customising your characters' personality with a couple of sort of interesting traits, then you go to said career, flick through that because nothing really happens occasionally get some pop up choices to get a promotion and whatnot. What's funny about all of this is EA dropped all pretence after awhile with the game and simply made the base game free.
When you do ahem, sale the high seas, you realise that in some cases the DLCs despite costing an arm and a leg barely add anything to begin with and in a lot of cases often end up being very annoying. Some examples of this would be their stupid hippy DLC ( It involved green living stuff ) where you get constantly pestered by the council to make your house environmentally friendly. Then there's other stuff that adds crap like dust bunnies and of course it's some silly micro-management garbage to give you busy work to do rather than any real gameplay.
This is a daily reminder from me that normies ruin everything and they ruined the Sims with shit like this and yes it's their fault. The Sims used to be a fairly expansive game but now like any franchise that used to be known for being quite in depth it's being dumbed down like crazy. I suspect when they're done milking the Sims 4 they'll announce the Sims 5 and it will be some shitty game they've put up for mobile. That you can play with one finger.
The Sims 4 can be moderately interesting, especially with mods. Unfortunately the gameplay loop gets a bit repetitive and the game is notorious for an absurd number of DLC's (many including a fair bit of gameplay additions).
The games definitely offer a certain kind of nostalgia just with the unique and chill styling. The music is pretty niche and nice too.
Oh, and there's a fair bit of wokeness of course on the part of the devs, but afaik it's almost entirely avoidable due to customization and/or mods. But even so, you would be giving EA money unless you sail the high seas.
Good to note on the wokeness and mods. I'll definitely have to get some. Its looking like I'll try 4 over 3 so far.
I remember people complaining about basic features being cut out of the core Sims 4 game, presumably to be sold back to you as DLC. So I'd be inclined to say no to spite EA and their shitty practices.
Personally the first is my favorite for the nostalgia, the graphics, and above all the music.
But TS2 was enjoyable as well, and you might just give that a try again. IMO the game has a lot more “flavor” and detail than the later entries (especially in animations) and is worth revisiting.
The graphics of 1 are definitely showing their age now, 2 as well but not as bad. I think 3 still holds up pretty well.
Sims is my guilty pleasure but as far as I know Sims 4 was the last one and nothing had been reported yet about Sims 5. I know it’s coming just no word yet. Only new stuff are add one or new territory within Sims 4
Didn't even know they were making 5, I remember liking Sims 2.
You should give 3 a go. The main additions are the open world and they replaced the personality points with traits that give the Sims real personality. 4 ditched the open world and is infested with pedo shit.
The titles take steps forwards and backwards in certain areas. 3 allowed for an almost-seamless open neighborhood, allowed you to edit your neighborhood (both in and out of game), had a colour wheel for item customisation and allowed custom patterns, but nickel and dimed the shit out of you and was poorly optimized.
4 somewhat pulled back on the nickel and diming, offers more meaningful gameplay items, does more interesting things with its worlds (secret areas of the world) and is better optimized, at the cost of limited lots, limited worlds and limited customisation, alongside a lack of cohesion in the world (you'll often see townies walking outside your house during school/ work hours) and less customisation with the removal of custom patterns and the colour wheel.
Depends on what your looking for game playwise and how "modern" it is. Each game really is a snapshot of the decade it's released in. The most recent one does have the most content but it is a reflection of modern times for better or worse. It is very much more Sims 2 like though than it's predecessor so if you like 2 you'll probably like 4.
Sims 3 is a different experience but it is saddled with a creaking engine where you can't use all the dlc at once without setting your computer on fire.
That's too bad about Sims 3 having a shit engine. So Sims 4 is good enough?
Sims 3 is better than Sims 4 despite the performance problems. Sims 4 has too many fat sims. If you like fat people you might like 4 better.
Of fucking course. It's not enough that they're all pedos. They have to be fat pedos.
It's not that bad, just load the game about 15 minutes before you want to start playing it.
Try project zomboid. It’s like the Sims for men. In a post apocalyptic zombie infested world. Lots of free mods too.
I'm pretty bored with zombie games these days, Rimworld looked like it might have been more my thing but like with Xcom the RNG drove me absolutely nuts. If I could have a Rimworld style game without the RNG cancer that would be perfect, but I don't see all that many games like that which are actually feature complete.
Yes if you don't pay for it because the DLC is insane. There's also fun mods around.
3 is probably the best overall and the graphics haven't aged too bad. 4 is pretty good though and you can do Star Wars stuff.
It's not fully Sims but I really liked Sims Medieval, was fun.
sims 3 is good but requires some mods to make it run correctly
unless on deep discount just pirate the fucking thing though when not on sale its far too expensive for its age
sims 4 is... OK? don't buy the DLC just pirate the entire thing there's a mod that removes a bunch of the gay pedo shit on based mods but there's no getting rid of the transformers settings
there's a fuck ton of custom content you can add available from many different websites for both games
I'm surprised you don't know that The Sims 4 has got a million adult mods going for it. And it's free, so it's basically a giant porn fantasy generator. But for actual gameplay? Sims 3 > 4 seems to be the consensus.
