The nine-to-five, in particular, was first implemented and popularized by Henry Ford, who used a philosophy of enriching their workers to both solidify his talent and create a customer who could purchase their products as well.
Henry Ford fucking hated unions, and it's savage that union pinkos nowadays simply use unionization as sheepskin to cover "seizing the means of production", and take credit for every good thing that ever happened to working men.
This was also part of the original city migration as you could lead a far more convenient lifestyle with less working hours. Detroit was such a manufacturing surplus it became a national cultural icon and was called the Paris of the West before some “things” in the 1960s happened and there was a mass population migration.
The Gilded Age didn't end because corporations had a change of heart lol
Well, they had a change of mind. They realized that they could truly solidify their power by working with the unions instead of against them, making any true, new competitors have to jump through the same hoops. That and they used it for near infinite PR.
The 8 hour work week isn't idea. I'd rather have 0% taxes and work 12 hour days earning tons more money with a bitch a home doing all my housework, cooking my meals and sucking my dick. Modern society is trash.
Or just choosing how much one wants to work or not. Why work 8 hour days for $100k/yr when I should be able to work 12 hour days for $150k/yr if I wanted?
Similarly if I could work 8 hour days for 100k, it would be nice to be able to work 6 hours for 75k. I know certain jobs aren't geared for that, but mine is and it is retarded that I can't do it simply because 40 hours is enshrined into all sorts of legislation. Fuck these retards who think the Jungle would be reality if we removed a lot of this legislation. In most cases I bet it is holding us back as a society.
The real trick here is that I'm on salary for 40 hours a week but I can get all my work done in 20 hours. I should be able to retain my salary and work 20 hours.
Very true. That's the kind of stuff I would like to be able to negotiate for but stuff like that is always extremely inflexible due to company policies which are generally the way they are due to various labor and tax laws. So it always ends up "we can give you a raise but we can't keep your pay the same and scale back your hours because something something benefits something something full time."
Apparently “labor activists” was what created the 9-5 not the explosion of the dual income home… next they’ll say that schools don’t start at 7 am because of the parents work schedules…
The forty hour workweek as an intern for me was hell on earth. That first week was torture! Gets better as you are more integrated into the company though.
The work day is 8 hours of sleep, 8 hours of work, 8 hours of non-work. It's basic math applied to society, not some movement by anyone in particular. If you need more than 8 hours of work, you're going to be doing more.
Wake up. Get ready. Let’s say 30 mins to get ready for work. Maybe 30 mins to drive to work. Then an hour lunch. 30 mins back home. Now you have 5 1/2 hours of non work time.

FTFY

I thought Henry Ford had something to do with it. Or was that with the modern work week
The 8 hour work week isn't idea. I'd rather have 0% taxes and work 12 hour days earning tons more money with a bitch a home doing all my housework, cooking my meals and sucking my dick. Modern society is trash.
Having all the other stuff plus 8 hour days would be nice though.
Or just choosing how much one wants to work or not. Why work 8 hour days for $100k/yr when I should be able to work 12 hour days for $150k/yr if I wanted?

Exactly. Government regulations and rules need to go.
And the 40-hour work week has long since outlived it's purpose. There are very few jobs that really need 8 hours days.

these green guys are annoying smug leftshits
Then you realize the long hours were less about productivity and more about keeping the peasants occupied so they didn't get themselves into trouble.

Except it’s not 8 hours of non work is it?
