It's a consequence not a causation. Tattoos have always been a way to stand out, typically in a military sense since it also made it easier for you to identify with a group if you share the same insignia.
This easily spread to criminal gangs, most notable of using Tattoos is the Yakuza which is often why people with tattoos are banned from hot springs. You also have the people that take it too far and most of their body is inked but that happens with anything so is a false conclusion.
This isn't a chemical used in tattoos making people more prone to be self destructive or violent but just a byproduct that there's a higher amount of people with tattoos and self destructive behaviour.

Well duh. Being deviants makes people get ink, not the other way around. We can be thankful that they identify themselves for our benefit so we can avoid them.
Compared to the average diets in the west, probably not. I'd be more concerned with the amount of soy and 'replacement meats' they keep trying to feed people than tattoos
But which causes which? A term I never here is "reversing the cause and effect." Well I here it in my head all the time. And it's not the same as "consequence not a causation" which has the effect of absolving all responsibility. And sometimes the cause and the effect, cause and effect each other. Is there a term for that catalytic behavior?
A bit confusing but are you saying that they're so interlinked that they are reacting off each other?
In that case, it'd be very dismissive to claim tattoos cause the self destructive behaviour since they've existed for centuries but the can signify being part of a group and once they have that association then their behaviour may be worse depending on which group they associate with.
I'm not claiming either way. But sometimes the cause is the the effect and vise versa. And sometimes they cause each other in a perpetual loop. My statements were more on the language of causality, and not the topic itself. As it tends to lock one into a singular logic set.
The couple normal guys I know with tons of tattoos are both from a background where they would benefit from standing out in such a way and also well off in their present lives in fields that the look is not likely to hurt their future prospects. They are really exceptions. The rest of the tattooed men I know have at some point been, if not still are, deadbeat drug addicts with jail time.
I do think this article gets a lot right. There's something weird about the desire for a lot of people. I've never understood it myself and I've never wanted a tattoo. Want to talk even more unhinged? Weird piercings. They are even more guaranteed to be fucked in the head.
Soldiers and gangsters are the only people that can wear tattoos properly. I think they make otherwise attractive women ugly and make otherwise normal looking civilian men appear ridiculous
I appreciate tattoos and extra piercings and shit like that. They're like neon colors on a poison frog, I know instantly not to get involved with that person.
There was a theory that went around the manosphere back when tattoos just started getting big that tattoos and piercings were not just signs of mental illness and drug abuse but cries for help. Basically, in a world where you cannot lash out externally it is a form of self-mutilation. Like those girls who used to cut their arms. It is a way to get attention safely in a world where one's reputation is worth everything.
This used to be a good rule of thumb to avoid bad people but unfortunately (because I hate tattoos) it's been mainstreamed and more and more normal people are getting them done. It could be less that they are a troubled mind or impulsive and more that they are someone who follows trends and just likes the style. It's easier for a responsible person to get away with a discreet tattoo than it was in the past. Even in Japan some hot springs are loosening the rules against visible tattoos because too many young people are inked these days.
A bit obscure, but anyone ever read the short story “Parker’s Back” back Flannery O’Connor. tl;dr, it’s about a guy who is obsessed with tattoos.
Never had any interest in tattoos myself. Excluding girls who get, like, a heart on their ankle or something small like that, most of the people I know with sleeves or other large amounts of tattoos seem to make a lot of bad decisions and have poor impulse control.
I feel it's a touch reductive to simply say people with tattoos suffer mental problems. Some do it strictly for their social circles/community (in which case they are earned). Others do it as a cry for attention. It's the latter that are the problem.

Depends, I miss the old depressed goth/emo girls, they were WAY better than the virtue signallers and ethots that are so pervasive nowadays...
I never thought I would miss scene girls with the racoon looking getup.

Because you can easily see the tattoos anywhere on their body and other customers don't like it. Like a full back tattoo a yakuza might have.
I've always maintained that tattoos are a way to show the world that your individuality is only skin deep.

Does the strict definition of physiognomy only apply to structural traits? Or are tattoos included?
I think it's just structural traits.
Tattoos fall under the broader principal of judging a book by its cover.

No, really? Tons of the people getting tattoos are doing so because they want to exhibit troubling behavior.

Most girls don't know a tattoo adds +18 years to their age at a glance.
And 18 victims to their assumed body count for anyone who sees their tramp stamp.
Nah. Tats are too mainstream to be an indicator of mental disorder.
Bullnose ring and danger hair though, 99.99% they are leftists with issues.
