Kotaku: The Resident Evil 4 Remake Changing Ashley’s Skirt Gives Me Hope (archive.is)

Sexually frustrated fans of the series were disappointed, seeming to not understand that there are already plenty of websites that will show them exactly what they’re looking for. But I was relieved. I want the RE4 remake’s changes to signal better days for video game skirts and, more broadly, female character design, letting them both migrate more toward the expressive, gender-fluid fashion real world women’s wear has been making since 2020. To best assess the possibility, I traveled through video game skirts’ brief history.

“Real world women wear” like the average rave dress of pasties, nylon, and mesh? Funny how you don’t decry that neopuritan…

early ‘80s home consoles tried to compete with the booming arcade market by entreating girls to their mostly shitty games.

Because “women” gamers still aren’t a thing statistically, where’s the masculine leg razor market?

That changed when video games decided to market their games, overwhelmingly, to boys, like they did in the arcade days. ‘90s fighting games like Mortal Kombat helped acclimate an audience to seeing attractive but untouchable women in their underwear.

Again, complaining about masculine leg razors marketing and women more covered up than in my average gym experience.

Fashion can be defined and redefined again. Outside of video games, in 2023, skirts are again becoming appropriate for non-female identifying people to wear. Stylish women themselves are considering what it means to dress for the “female gaze,” or in stereotypically feminine clothing—like colorful glitter eyeliner, laced corsets, pink skirts—prioritizing art and romance over sexuality. Though the Resident Evil 4 remake’s outfit change bows out of the discussion rather than embraces the skirt as a more fluid, expressive device than the past 20 years of games have allowed for, I can empathize that elbowing out of the boy’s club is difficult. But I do think that video game fashion will change as long as the real world does, too. It’s been a long time since video games were marketed just to men. Now, we’re all looking. Respectfully.

Things that aren’t happening at all… one quick look through your local tinder will show that not only are women not “dressing for romance” the only ones who are mostly covered are morbidly obese. This neopuritan crying is why no one respects female opinions.

The irony is modern women, specifically more attractive ones tend to dress closer to the likes of old school Lara Croft. Every time I go out shopping, I constantly see women wearing revealing or skin tight form fitting clothes leaving little to the imagination.

I didn't even know "skorts" were a thing until this remake, I mostly just see women wearing yoga pants, tight jeans, or booty shorts.

But I was relieved.

"Now I can get back to my gore fetish, tearing medievil peasants to shreds, without having to see underpants."

Be fair, a woman with the collection of opinions overtly expressed in that article, and all the ones we can reasonably assume she must also hold based on it, is probably obese, or hangs out in “spaces” mostly occupied by obese girls.

Find a pretty little thing in your local bar, and if you could somehow convince her to slog through this article, she’d be like… “um, what?”

Doubt. Females always fall for propaganda.

gender-fluid fashion real world women’s wear has been making since 2020.

A lot of girls wear jeans but I'm not sure what gender-fluid fashion is? Is the author trying to say gender-neutral?

My take is she’s claiming “everyone wears everything” because degenerates like sam smith wore a skirt

maybe they imply that these women don't wear underwear so their jeans are full of gender-fluid?

I’ve long suspected that gender-fluid, non-binary, etc is just another pendulum swing in fashion (i.e. clothing and accessories, not wider trends) but since it’s being worn by a generation of over-schooled but under-learned critical theorists, it can’t just be “our clothes are less traditional,” it has to be “we’re heroes who are disrupting old assumptions about gender!!!” which from there all but forced them to take the next step, “I’m not just dressed in a neutral way, I’m like LITERALLY gender neutral deep down in my soul (that I don’t believe in because ew, religion)!”

It's part of the mass renaming of things that has to occur to erase existing culture and replace it with their own.

women want to be as slutty as they want in real life.. but they still want to maintain some kinda facade in video games that they are not lol.

Hope it was worth it, Sony. This article is your reward for properly kneeling. Beggars can't be choosers.
