I can't help but liken it to Munchausen by proxy, and of course, it's more common in women because women believe anything an authority tells them, and they love attention.
I can certainly attest to this phenomena. Someone I know got into multiple self destructive habits in quick succession within a few short years of these topics getting broad coverage and depictions in the shows she watched. IE, cutting, anorexia/bulimia.
The sad part I think is that the person chose this path of self destruction as some warped way to avoid the real truth of what's bothering her. The fact that she's just not that bright and not very charming.
And in a more conservative culture, she doesn't exactly have sexual promiscuity to fall back on, thus a random obsession with body image that makes even less sense in the given population. Not that I think that more access/opportunities for sexual promiscuity would be a better option, but at least the body image issues wouldn't strike me as so bizarre and extra irrational.
Back on topic though, it's becoming increasingly evident that "raising awareness" often has a tendency to draw people into developing specific psychological conditions in the first place. Especially in individuals who already have some more concrete, root psychological challenges ailing them.
I was thinking the other day it would be funny if we somehow made it a law to eat paint chips everyday. How many bootlicking vaxxtards would do it and thus cleanse the gene pool?
