Now the record holder for most concurrently watched single-player game on Twitch. But sure, it's the fans that are toxic, and not the obsessed detractors.
The articles about the milestone all make mention of the “big streamer boycott”. Imagine the cognitive dissonance required to claim both 1) that a lot of gamers and streamers are boycotting something and 2) the game is a massive hit with record breaking viewership. If only every game could be “cursed” with such boycotts.
Yeah, that is weird. I'd expect an article calling Harry Potter fans toxic to whine about the fandom's refusal to follow the tenets of the Church of Girl Dick, but instead they're taking the TERF line that troonery is misogynistic (while leaving out that it's also misandric, misanthropic, and all other sorts of evil). But they're making those accusations against the mob trying to terrorize people into staying away from the game, not the fans who like the game. Maybe the title is just clickbait.
I did a closer read and it's all over the place. I can't make heads or tails of the point they're trying to make. It's a terribly written article that manages to limbo below the ridiculously low bar that's set for "journalism" these days.
I think it was intentionally written vaguely so that there's just an idea of some "toxic fans" out there without getting into the details of who those toxic "fans" are.
By my reading, the author is calling trannies toxic, saying their anger is pointless/misdirected/counterproductive. The article gives examples showing that many people involved in the game and streaming it are already pro-tranny, and Rowling's cancelation has failed.
Even funnier that the game has clearly passed through the agenda filter a few times, never knew 1800s England was so multicuturally diverse with trannies even.
It’s actually the game they claim to want but turns out it was never about the game or the content, it’s about internet slapfight points.
It basically has the problem that the woke LotR has - the world got less diverse over time.
Granted, as far as the non-sexual diversity part goes, the time is pretty much at the last of the great days of the British Empire, so I could imagine Hogwarts drawing the best and brightest from around the entire Empire at the time, with wizards training there and going home to their respective countries to pass on what they learned in Scotland. Once the Empire degraded to Commonwealth, by the 1990s, most would have just stayed in their own countries, and Hogwarts went back to being a UK school.
I can't push aside the blatant homosexuality, though (some teacher I met and did a quick quest for out in the wild, dunno about that other character). it IS the 1880s, and no one would be so blatant as to refer to her "wife". Roommate, friend, even "sister". I mean, these people who push this shit also complain about how bad things were in the past. If they stick modern crap into their period pieces, their kids/grandkids are never going to believe that they were EVER "persecuted". They want to eat their fucking cake, and have it, too.
And the character creator sucks balls. I just got lazy and wound up with a vaguely Harry-esque kid.
It would be reasonable for 1800s Britain, the largest empire in world history, to have an unusually diverse magic academy in a setting where people can teleport vast distances easily. That's not why they did it, obviously, but it could be plausible in the setting.
Anybody remember the phases of geeker gate? Basically the blueprint for how companies operate. Attacking fans was on the list I remember. It seems you haven’t arrived until your fanbase becomes toxic.
Although I love that meme that shows the fake fans asking when (insert the IP) became so toxic and the real fans respond with when you arrived
It's old enough that a lot of people who grew up on it are adults, at least in age. There's a nostalgia factor at play here. I like a lot of stuff that I probably wouldn't be a fan of had I been born 20 years later.

Wait -- so people who are demanding that nobody play Harry Potter games are "fans" of Harry Potter?
This doesn't even make sense.

No, read further than the first two paragraphs. They are indeed talking about the fans enjoying the game.

I can get behind that. I was honestly off put by the first few paragraphs too.
Yeah, my take-away as well.

Dunno, Star Wars fans demand no one watches new star wars.

"read another book" has transitioned to "play another game"
The only real fans of Harry Potter are ten year old kids.
That's the reading age it's geared to.

And every millennial on Tumblr.
