Honestly wasn't even that common. The issue is that some tribes has a perpetual warrior class and engaged in permanent irregular warfare. Those ones tended to start shit. Most of the time, the tribes were dealt with fairly on an individual level by the individual settlers.
Once you start involving the US government, or the warband tribes, or the identitarian indian zealots like "King Phillip" or Tecumseh, then you get much more serious conflict.

The settlers typically got along and traded well with most of the tribes that didn't attack them.
