Let me guess the excuse, all the black queens and kings where too much into slavery and blood sacrifice so you had to borrow European monarchy because they've got more decorum.
They just ignore all that stuff anyway when they're telling a story "inspired by real life events."
I mean they tried to with 'The Woman King ' but black people called them out for it.
To put it bluntly, black people hold a way higher grudge against the negros that killed, raped, enslaved and sacrificed their ancestors for booze.

Spez: I usually make an exception if it's voice acting, because it doesn't matter what you look like there. And even THAT has exceptions, such as when that guy stepped down from voicing Carl on The Simpsons after decades in the role, so an actual black guy could do it, and now he sounds completely wrong. It was complete virtue signaling.

In the case of the author it might be more greed than fear. Producers tell him there's no way the show gets green lit with a white lead, because that's just how show business is now, but they're interested if it's a black lead.
Now if he refuses that, it's just one of a million shows that never came to be and the mob never hears about it to come after them. But he doesn't get any of that sweet Netflix money.
