Looks like they got called on their bluff. Just like "from our cold dead hands" was also just a bluff.
Weakness invites aggression.
The fence would have opened the next day and the story would have been used by the enemy to exacerbate the situation. Dying without accomplishing anything is counterproductive.
So anyway I started blasting.
Sounds about right. But they'll send a SWAT team complete with APC if you go to a bar with your buddies when it's "illegal" to do so.
And that is when I would have arrested them for treason.
