What's up with black people and asians? I understand that asians are successful and there is a resentment there but it seems odd to go from that to beating up random asians or shooting them. Is there more to this conflict?
Asians in general have a culture of not bothering people in public, ranging from don't be loud to "don't report your neighbor getting raped inside her apartment to not bother the cop and families that's what the Yakuza are for" in Japan.
Blacks, especially Blacks in the USA have a much warmer approach, showing high level of excitement when the situation is appropriate, when two culture that are both end of the spectrum meet there will be clash, also "acting white" is poorly seen by thugs in general which will lead to more clashes, the thing is, Mister Kim might be overly polite and mannered, he still have a loaded Sig Saueur under the counter and his patience is fading.
Even before the pandemic, Asians have a thing for mask, another cultural thing I guess, when there is that much people per meter square (Beijin and Tokyo in particular) some shit could spread real fast.

It's culture clash. Many poor asians move to affordable neighborhoods. That usually means black or hispanic. They work hard in menial jobs, save up, and open businesses. They have their kids work in the family business while also sending them to after-school tutoring full of other asian kids.
In the black community, this isn't seen as success. The academic success isn't seen as a product of hard work and stress. It's seen as cheating or hoarding academic resources. The economic success isn't seen as business acumen. It's seen as exploitation and extraction of the little wealth that blacks do have. Due to poor impulse control, this resentment quickly turns into violence.
