People hate zuckerberg and facebook.
Then again, instagram is facebook and so is whatsapp and those apps are widly popular. Basically completely ubiquitous these days.
So will that happen with meta? I've never used a VR chat room as I'm not a deranged faggot. Do they have appeal to zoomers and younger?
Meta itself is a direct copy of https://decentraland.org/. I'm not sure how popular that is though but I remember seeing second life and thinking "who the fuck would even consider wasting their time with this" and then seeing how popular it was. Roblox is another virtual social network world that is wildly popular too. And I can see how many people these days would want to escape into a virtual world.
No, any serious VR players dumped Oculus when they announced FB accounts would be required in the future. People who bought the Quest/Quest 2 because they're cheap might log in to see what's available, but it doesn't mean they have any real interest in FB offerings.
As you implied the most popular VR chat thingy for weirdos who know da wei is VRChat. It already has first-to-market advantage, is free, and has nothing to do with "meta".
Is VRChat actually popular though?
I believe it's the number one VR app, but that might include non-VR users. (you can run it on a monitor)
It's big with streamers and most people that have vr will have given it a shot.
That is so very gay. I feel sick
Agree, i went WMR after fb bought Oculous, had the dv1. Would never ever connect to anything FB owned.
Instagram and whatsapp didn't start as Facebook endeavors they just got bought out so a lot of people don't associate them with Zuckerberg
That's right, they don't have the poisonous facebook brand / image. But facebook might push this product without their branding also. And that'll be enough for normies not to realize where it came from
Older people are the primary demographic of FB and they do not fuck with VR.
So no, probably not.
I twill take off because our rulers will want it to take off.
All major corporations will begin using it, no matter how terribly built and insecure it is.
yes it's clearly been "chosen" considering all the free press beat ups it's been getting. But will that be enough for it to actually "work".
What worries me though is how much market testing I'm sure they did on it. Maybe they know that demoralized and depraved retards will use this in droves.
It will not.
The people who fantasize about this shit are too far removed from the reality of daily life for the majority of the working class.
I don't know. Look at tiktok with zoomers. When I first saw it I though it was the most depraved, most faggoty, most deranged and cringe thing I've ever seen. I thought no parent would allow their kids to use it, etc, etc, etc. But not, zoomers love it and their gen X parents don't give a shit.
Tiktok is what makes me hesitate. And there are retarded faggots currently who use VR chat rooms (I read it was, at the moment, mostly furries, but still).
Yeah, that was a mistake. Parents are letting screens raise their kids because it keeps them out of their hair, and they've been doing it for longer than a lot of us have been alive. First the TV, then the computer, and now the smartphone/tablet. Among many other horrible things, social media allowed the tranny problem to metastasize. The last decade has been the perfect storm: Inattentive parents, an infinite supply of stimulation, an endless supply of degenerate porn, and light speed communication with every sexual predator on the planet. It's a miracle that there's anything left of Western society.
There's stuff left of ancient Greek and Roman societies too. Our ruins are just fresher.
Meta itself though is a ripoff of: https://decentraland.org/
Just like Second Life a generation ago.
It'll go nowhere.
Second life was a big hit but it didn't innovate and stagnated.
Second Life at its peak was in the ballpark of Age of Conan and EVE Online in terms of accounts and online users.
Not exactly worthy of being called "a big hit". A big polished pile of cow shit can get a million accounts and ten thousand concurrent active just off of people saying "Hey, come look at this pile of cow shit." See Wildstar for example.
Right right. Apple were the ones to change bluetooth headsets from naff to cool. If anyone can normies into VR it's apple.
Kind of a grey pill.
A good example is the VR world created by the founders of SecondLife, Sansar.
It floundered because the content was "curated" instead of letting people make whatever they want.
Another example is the snap build tools released for Doom 2016. People do make custom levels but it's nothing like the mapping scene for the original Doom which is still going on today.
No.
I still think VR will be no more than a fad with respect to it being a mainstream product. I don't really have any argument behind it other than that's just what I think. I'm not sure I change my mind on that until I see 5 year olds with VR on their head at close to the same level they use phones and tablets today.
The tech has been lagging for VR stil but it's catching up. Many people get motion sick from it though. Maybe they'll be able to fix that too or kids, who've been on it their whole lives, will simply adapt / evolve to accept it.
I can seriously see parents buying this for their kids to shut them up. The same way they do with phones and ipads.
Like with Bitcoin and electric cars, if it's the future for more than a decade, it's not the future.
No it won’t take off. I already see how they’re trying to “make it a thing” by talking about how “real estate in the metaverse is selling out fast”, but people aren’t that dumb.
There’s no value in it. There might be some value in the long term future. It would be cool to “walk through” a house you wanted to buy or “see” a farm or something like that without actually having to travel there, but making VR useful takes some skill that Facebook doesn’t have.
Man I hope you're right but in my experience betting against that is always wrong sadly
My guess is it will take off the same way Zoom took off. When did you first hear of Zoom? Was it when your university or workplace required you to use it? Would you have ever used Zoom otherwise?
I could see the angle of requiring it for grade/highschool and there being funding to ensure that every family has access to the Metaverse (like the only reason Chromebooks are popular is because YOU bought thousands of them for school children).
Man that is a big black pill. I really hope the establishment doesn't push it like that.
No. Saw the story about the stupid wedding on it and the wife asked if it was that garbage I tried out years ago, Playstation home.
Spacial web 3.0 is probably going to take off, yes, but we need to do everything in our power to ensure it is decentralized instead of being controlled by big tech corps like Meta. If we fail, we'll get further centralized control of the internet as it pushes further into our lives (think augmented reality projected over the top of everything we interact with).
"Spacial" do you mean second life but with VR and crypto?
I mean nearly everything will be connected to the internet, creating a networked layer of virtual space on top of our meat space. You'll interface with it through "augmented reality" - either glasses or maybe eventually implants.
No, we aready have vr chat and second life. Combining them doesnt make it new.
The tech isnt there yet. Until we get holodeck and dont have to wear mask and look at screens 2 inches from our face it will remain niche. No matter how much is spent marketing it.
Which won't happen.
Oh, I'm sure the rich will have 3d rooms, with fancy projection tech. But the rich are, well, rich.
For everyone else the tech will be relegated to DisneyQuest II.
Not organically. the technology for what meta offers is already here. everyone who wants to live in a pod and have all social interaction be virtual can do so.
Reminder anyone using the marketing phrase "metaverse" is a paid shill for fb
Vr will not be mainstream until both eyetracking and hand tracking are too notch. I own all the equipment. It is a fun party gag at the moment, nothing more.
Honestly, just a matter of time until they find the correct way to market this to people, tell them why they "need" it, and then the people will blindly buy into, or else be peer-pressured into.
However, there's one big thing they would need to fix first. It has to be so easy to use a literal dumbass can use it. Right now, VR is still pretty finicky, it requires quite a lot of space and some setup, and even ingame, you need to actually move your arm around to do stuff, while normally it would just be a quick button press. Remember the Kinect? This shit failed simply because raising your arm for 3 seconds every time you need to validate an action is simply boring and tiring, and humans are just very lazy. It's just a matter of time until we find the correct way to do it though.
VR, with a headset covering your entire head and eyes, is the perfect innocent tool to do very nasty stuff like mind reading and eye tracking (for more ads and such). I have no doubt than in maybe 10-20 years, we will be able to read someone's mind with just a headset that you put on your head because you want to interact with your family. There's no way FB or others are going to miss such an opportunity. And companies are getting exceptionally good at selling product and make people think they need said product.
