The SJW backlash around Rising of the Shield Hero, Uzaki chan and Redo of Healer led me to check out these animes.
I ended up enjoying all three of these animes
Good names. Still haven't checked out Uzaki, but the recent recommendation of Dungeon Builder by Gerry Conway prompted this thread - https://www.sankakucomplex.com/2021/05/17/power-girl-co-creator-labels-manga-as-sexist-misogynistic/
The manga was decent, not earth shatteringly good but definitely not a bad read. Unlike modern comics.
It made me think about all of the stuff over the years they've been screeching about, and which names held up.
Replace Redo with Goblin Slayer and this is the same for me. For me personally, Redo is a bit of a line too far. Let it exist, I am absolutely not contesting that, but it is NOT my cup of tea in any way so I didnt watch it.
Although I will admit that I had a weird opposite reaction one, where the anti-SJW types complained about it but I dont think it deserved it. That being the game Hades, which is hands down on of my favorite games ever, but when I saw people complaining, having played the game myself it came off as massive amounts of nitpicking.
I haven’t played it, but if people are bitching about the homoerotic elements, well, that was just kind of common in Greek culture.
No, most of the bitching I saw was that Athena and Ares were black. Nevermind that none of the gods had natural skin color (Hades is red, Artemis is green, Poseidon is blue, etc), its not even a natural shade of black skin. Specifically, Athena is basically obsidian black (like the paintings on pots) and Ares is kind of an ash grey. There were also some complains that Aphrodite looked kind of masculine, but I honestly dont see it (some blocky-ness, but again its fitting with the overall game design).
Beyond that, I thought it played extremely well, the fact there was progression between runs is something I wish more roguelikes would do, and I actually LOVED the story of it. So I chalk it up to some people being too nitpicky because they have been hit so much they jump at every shadow.
I loved Hades. I have heard pretty much universal praise for that game.
When did the antisjw side attack the game? I just must have not seen it.
It was a few months back (around when the 1.0 update dropped) when some games journo types were praising the game and the journo brought up some things like "black Athena" and "Zag is Bi" and other of the usual talking points, so some people on both KIA's were saying that it must be a bad game. To be fair, there were more people saying it was still a great game even if the SJW journos were praising it, and that they were basically looking at it through their own lens and it was not accurate. Just something that I saw and was kind of annoyed by.
Eh I can understand why some people reacted like that.
To be fair I also am wary whenever the game journalists praise a game and if they specifically point out shit like a previously non black character is black or a character is bi, it is major red flags.
The game journalists' praise is generally an indicator of wokeness like Zuby's razor.
Zuby's razor is If someone has pronouns in bio, you know you are dealing with a crazy leftist.
Like I said, I think its a case of people who have been in the fight too long and so they have started seeing enemies everywhere. I absolutely understand it, but at the same time I would expect people on our side to be a little more mindful of the fact that the journo types have a bias and its usually not right, for better or worse.
An interesting game in that style is Prey Mooncrash. It's probably more fun if you played the original Prey but the gameplay is totally different.
I don't particularly try to take in something just because people reee about it. I can find entertainment on my own based on my own tastes, not what offends others the most.
Kingdom Come Deliverance was fun though, and a lot of people were very upset that it lacked "diversity" as in non-white people.
Honestly this, I don’t base my tastes on what a hive-mind thinks is good or bad (can’t say I’m invulnerable to the group-think tendency though).
I’m also not into outing/reminding about targets for the woke on a public forum, but that’s just me since most of the stuff I like, they end up hating.
You've never seen strange media or social attention given to a given book, game, movie, etc., and either based on the description or curiosity, performed a cursory check and ended up liking it? Really? I have my doubts.
I don’t use social media any longer. I’m not a follower in that capacity.
I used to lead people towards media I liked, making long posts about shows/movies/games, or threads discussing them.
I don’t do that anymore.
Fair enough. I read a lot of stuff, so even though I don't use social media (in the vein of Twitter, Facebook), these things naturally make their way through. For the longest time, I either didn't use Reddit or occasionally read it for news aggregation...most of my time was either on work or sports (gave that up eventually).
I know I was turned onto a bunch of stuff back in the 90s when I was hanging around Fido_HolySmoke, but I can't think of anything recently I was drawn to because of a controversy. Probably because SJWs hate everything, it seems. I dread the Dragonriders of Pern movie coming out of development hell, because they'll totally ruin that, too. Not the casting (if one read the books, one would expect pretty much everyone to be a muddy-looking mutt, whatever physical descriptions that I can't remember aside because the author wouldn't have thought that far at first, I'm sure), but they'd likely totally misrepresent the fuedal nature of the piece and totally fail to understand why things appeared so "sexist" (and they'd be like the son's writing, and fetishize the green dragon riders overmuch, too, I bet.)
The Bible, and books in general.
Some titles that I can recall off memory...
Game - Omega Labyrinth - Rogue dungeon crawler where girls absorb ω power that inflates their breast size, and physical abilities, while in the dungeon. Very addictive.
Anime - Interspecies Reviewers - Best, funniest anime ever about interspecies brothel reviews.
LN - Rising of the Shield Hero - Story about an isekai protagonist, who can only defend, being framed by the country's royalty. Pretty decent read, but it spoiled towards the latter stages after his tunnel vision clears and his character changes.
Manga - Goblin Hunter - Heartwarming story about an adventurer teaming up with others and hunting goblins. Manga was the initial entry point, but I flipped to the LNs after.
The Red Dead series. I never thought I'd enjoy an old West themed game but I gave 2 a chance because of the Shirrako incident on Youtube. And they apparently think the portrayal of Charles is racist, because everything they hate just has to be racist so they can be self righteous about hating the game.
I've spite bought a few games - hatred, kingdom come
Nothing. Already knew about things they went fucknuts over.
Sense - A Cyberpunk Ghost Story for the Switch
I'm usually a "bleeding-edge" type, so it's my positive reviews that trigger the triggerati into a tizzy, which leads to others discovering things.
But only in the realm of games and shows. Personalities, IRL people, like Crowder, or ItsAGundam, or even CriticalDrinker I did not discover prior to the REEEEEs. I may have later on, but my introduction was a chorus of complaints.
That anime reviewers in general are SJWs themselves. I understand that a few of them are actually former games journalists. If they disapprove of it, give it a second watch over. Often their complaints won't line up with other trash they like, and you can chalk it up to personal political grievances.
Goblin Slayer, which was already mentioned, and Demon Slayer. The latter doesn't have SJW backlash but I found out about it from generally anti-SJW channels talking about how it completely destroyed the US comic market.
