The original Star Trek was a military show. Shatner said that Roddenberry sold it to him as Horatio Hornblower in space. All the follow up series completely changed that to SJWs in space. Like Roddenberry had a change of heart in his old age or something. In one of Shatner's books he said the stuido had to keep telling Roddenberry no because he was desperate to film the Star Trek crew going back in time and rescuing JFK.
