I loved the Big Bang Theory but sometimes I feel like it was a double edged sword because that was when, at least in my memory, “nerd stuff” started being cool and mainstream. I always laugh at how people proudly call themselves nerds since it’s trendy or as a lifelong comic book reader someone who watches some MCU movies and thinks they are an expert in comic books.
I honestly miss the days when reading comic books, sci fi, or being a fan of Star Wars/Star Trek was something you got made fun of for.
Anyone think these hobbies will ever be niche again?
Edit: the more I think about the show, I’m reminded of someone who said that Big Bang Theory was a minstrel show for nerd culture.
FFS why?
It wasn't "funny", it was just a sitcom of nerd culture references. Friends, but with Star Wars. Like, if you enjoyed that, you were just looking for validation. And if you think about it enough, you realize how fucking sad that is.
"(Sigh) Hardly worth it."
"AL!"
Oh, yeah, that makes a lot more sense. Though they did play up Peggy's grosser habits from time to time (in the early days she DID cook, but not very well, very reluctantly, and would smoke while doing so.) But then there were the times when the show ended on a Bundys Triumphant note, and they'd happily run upstairs.
MuchMusic still runs it, amazingly enough.
Validation for what? My main point was that was when I first noticed how cool stuff was that used to get you made fun of.
I like what I like. I never needed validation
I got the shit kicked out of me repeatedly by farm kid footballers.
Big Bang Theory played for laughs to that crowd.
Fuck them.
You know the more I think about it as time has passed that show didn’t do us any favors
It was blackface for nerds.
But I get you. Revisiting some of my old favorites has made me realize that all of this insanity has been going on a lot longer than I thought, and a part of me wishes I could return to ignorance. I can't even watch Star Trek TNG anymore because Patrick Stewart is just a total fucking retard IRL. I loved that show.
Some of those episodes in retrospect have aged really poorly.
Babylon 5 otoh has become prophetic.
I’m actually watching Babylon 5 for the first time. Only in the first season but enjoying it. TNG was good Trek. My favorite is the original but I liked all shows till current
Season one is a bit like watching the foundation of a building being poured.
It digs some deep holes, fills them with rusty metal bars crudely welded together, just to pour cement all over it.
But once the season is over, you have a sturdy base and the story proper can begin.
and the people who made fun of you for it are now telling you to be inclusive...to them.
Were you there when Bazinga was on /v/.
This show was the beginning of the end of internet culture. Not even 4Cuck could stop it.
The thing I hated most about that show was how much they all idolised that waste of space waitress.
Yes, yes, username checks out and whatever else, but that was so odd when you think about it. They were successful men, idolizing a fuck up woman who was literally worthless.
Were you there when some wombyn eceleb said she would cross the street to avoid gaymers.
I wish they had kept avoiding us. Would have been better than now, where they take over everything and brag about it for a day a year.
I have actually noticed that. Makes so many things unwatchable because I notice it so much more now I know what the agendas behind it are.
Very good point
It's as if you just discovered this pesky thing called 'evolution'.
Do you hear yourself speak, gay boy?
I never watched it when it was new. Tried watching it a few months ago.
I immediately disliked every character in that show, and thought it was the most faggiest thing I'd subjected myself to since Two and a Half Men.
I found it funny the first few seasons. It was not as bad as the guys here say. For me was a parody of what other people thought of how nerds act, which made it very funny.
I'm a guy who went to math competitions, played video games and was heavy in to fantasy and I could not relate to those guys at all.
This is the show to me, a hell you can't escape.
This is what it sounds like to me.
Every show with a laugh track is figuratively the worst.
Gha! Why would you post that? More, why would someone play that? I lasted about 20 seconds before my brain forced me to run away.
Oh wow!
I won't lie there's some scenes I laughed at. Then I tried to actually watch the whole show a few years ago. I had let my DVR record it and pretty much had the entire series. I couldn't get very far. It was just bad. I think by then I was starting to see it more as a trojan horse. I'd say not even for nerd culture, but for the religion of science.
I was much more of a social outcast and computer/business nerd than a DnD/comics/Pokemon nerd in school anyway. I also grew early so I was a pretty big guy until about 10th grade. Add that to my personality and the people that would make fun of me didn't really have much to get out of it.
I've gotten more into the entertainment media side over the years, and then aggressively less as it's gone woke, but to answer your question, no I think it's gone. It's just not even the same product anymore.
Marvel Comics and Star Wars were bought by Disney. They'll never allow them to be niche again.
