alt-tech: dissenter browser
posted 5 years ago by acp_k2win 5 years ago by acp_k2win +27 / -0

https://dissenter.com/download

I'm trying it out now. So far looks OK on k2win and ruqqus. The dissenter comments appear to not work because of attacks on gab's infrastructure but but browser itself appears to be fine.

Discover a comment section on every URL online.

That's an interesting feature. Not sure a feature I want, but well, interesting.

The Dissenter addon was amazing back in it's (very limited) day. One of the best aspects of the internet is getting people feedback on things and sharing information. I often read an online article or blog post or something like that and think "I can't be the only one who sees what's wrong with this, right? Dissenter allowed for access to feedback across the web. And the best part, if you don't want it, you don't have to look at it.

It bothers me that a single entity would know my entire web history. they would have to, in order to serve the respective comments.

Most article comments use Disqus. This isn't much different than posting with your Disqus account everywhere; it's just that news sites have completely removed article comments because their narrative is flattened when people can speak freely.

Comments could be retrieved through Tor in background while the actual site loaded normally through direct connection.

I think Google has limited Chrome extensions so much this would have to be in the browser not in an extension.

I don't know if Gab do this, but they could. Brave already has Tor support baked in.

that part doesn't appear to be working unfortunately but it was pretty sweet when it first came out

Yeah, the comment thing seems to have stopped a good while back. Dissenter also hasn't appeared to get much attention from the devs and it can be clunky to keep updated. I've switched back (mostly) to Brave for now.

Oh, it’s a Gab thing? Maybe I’ll try it out once Gab can stabilize again.

I tried to install the dissenter extension a few months back, but the instructions seem to be outdated, and I don't know of a way to actually get it.
It seems development has halted. Personally, I'm not gonna put effort into onboarding Dissenter unless there's signs that more attention is going to maintaining it.

I love it. Use the browser. The extension, like many Gab products, was banned from app stores / browser extension stores.

I like the idea of it, but unfortunately they didn't like the idea of having it work on my operating system.

I've been using Brave and it has been a positive change.
