With the rollout of the vaccine now actually happening the CDC has changed their page to now say that the vaccine+ masks+ social distancing are needed. New ads are going out on the radio stating the same. This is not about a virus.

Psychological conditioning.
3 things that I can think of.
First, it has some degree of plausibility behind it so the average person can say "ok, I can see that" and get on board.
Second (probably most importantly) it makes it VERY easy for the Karens. Just at a glance, anyone can quickly see who is playing ball and who is not and the busybody people will jump all over the non-compliant folks. If you want to keep your boot on someone getting some people to keep fighting with others makes like much easier.
And finally, facial recognition is minimally important these days. Keep in mind, cameras have already been branded racist by the Woke Mob (aka, the foot soldiers for the authoritarians). And, for the type of surveillance that the govt actually wants, facial recognition is mostly useless. Tracking people's phones and monitoring social media is a lot better at IDing Wrongthink than cameras. And if you really want to track someone on surveillance camera footage you can get things like gait recognition going.
One more thing: it reduces sympathy felt for people when you can't see their face. Social isolation is very important for demoralization.
Why do you need a mask to identify a person when everyone is carrying a tracking device in their pocket?
Even better, Gates and pals have unironically been pushing for nanomachines to be added to vaccines to "ensure your health" and "give a record of vaccination."
External controls are outdated.
Don't be surprised if soon we see some massive obvious false-flag on the scale of 9/11 that will be used to justify a legal and public national registry and tracking database.
Based off of what I've said before, probably to intentionally infect people with bacterial pneumonia and pass it off as Covid. Most doctors and hospital staff I know wont wear the same mask for more than 2 hours and even the diehard maskers would avoid answering when I ask if they seriously believe that people wear their masks as directed and dont reuse them multiple times between washes, on top of the fact that the high temp treatment needed is not really within standard dryer range. The fact of the matter is that masks are horrendous for your personal health and giant cesspools for harmful bacteria.
Not unless the patient demands testing for a bacterial panel, and even then a 'positive' covid test result will be all they mention as the cause for pneumonia.

You have to wear a mask with a vaccine, and the disease mutates at an extremely accelerated rate, to the point where it's likely that there are currently multiple strains in a year.
You're a god-damned fool if you think that the masks are ever coming off:
If you don't have 100% vaccine adoption, there will to be too many people who haven't been vaccinated to allow the lockdowns to be lifted and the masks to come off. If you do have 100% vaccine adoption, there will be another strain that the vaccine won't cover, and therefore there will be too many people who don't have the new vaccine to allow the lockdowns to be lifted and the masks to come off.
You only get to not be locked down, or not be forced to wear a mask if you've donated your blood to a government tracing service and/or if you are a member of the inner party.
There is a third option...

So they make better facial recognition that can't be fooled with mere Lone Ranger bandit masks, since the filthy dog-eating chinkystinkyfinks wear masks as a matter of course, because it's so crowded and dirty in asia. This is in fact what they're doing, just search for the tech articles on the matter, and start keeping an eye specifically on sci-tech news, not general headline nonsense.
Masks interfere very little with facial recognition. China has been able to use facial recognition despite mask wearing for a while already, and there is no better time for the West to adopt that tech. They're already pushing for it to see who is 'complying with public health guidelines'.
Masks are only going to make things worse in the long run. The virus that permeates the flimsy fabric barrier are going to be selected for survival on smaller and smaller aerosolized moisture particles, meaning what survives will be far more transmissible than what we started with. It’s the same reason we don’t wantonly prescribe antibiotics for every minor disease. Every time I read about some “new strain” I’m all but certain it’s a problem we created.
Based on what I've read this just seems to be a 'new' strain that is predicted to be more infectious. Which should be taken with the same grain of salt that the 2 million deaths in the US prediction was. Newer viral strains often adapt to poorly managed treatments, which is common in social healthcare countries, the most blatant example of this is malaria in the Pacific and Africa. However, what is not noted, is that these newer covid strains tend to be far milder in symptoms and impact. What is troubling is that again the posturing is doomsaying which is also going to have a massive placebo effect on most people. I've seen numerous patients who magically worsened severely when told they tested positive, despite their charts improving and ones who self described symptoms went from dying to just a cold when they tested negative.
Oh hell, I know so many people who have a cough, are convinced they’re dying, get a test, test negative, and suddenly they never really felt that bad to start with. Media hype is killing anyone’s ability to accurately assess their own risks.
Most people I know who got tested were over whatever they had before the results came back.
