Flying with a small personal stash, any tips? From legal Washington to the newly legal Montana (media.kotakuinaction2.win)

This sounds like a bad idea as commercial air travel is an area where Federal jurisdiction comes into play, and it's still illegal under Federal law:

“Marijuana is illegal under federal law, and federal law governs airplane travel in this country,” he says.

The airspace you’ll be traveling through is considered federal territory; hence, why it can’t come on your flight. That includes flying within states where pot use is legal, or flying between states — even if both allow it for recreation. If you leave a state with marijuana, “you’ve broken the law of the state that you purchased it in, you’ve broken the law of the state that you’re going into, and you’ve broken federal law,” Mishkin says.

Still congratulations on your move out of Washington. I hope to also be a "former Washingtonian" in the near future, though I haven't yet figured out where my new home will be.

Not moving just yet, it's a Thanksgiving get together and relocation expedition. Putting the move together.

Don't travel with that. Buy some new weed from a local farmer with tegridy.

It's still a federally scheduled drug somehow. MT cops will steal your drugs (and smoke them), so don't be brazen (blazin').

Because the federal government doesn't want people using drugs known to cause psychosis. Can you honestly look at the left today and say we need more madmen?

You mean that Reefer Madness that I've heard talk about?

Probably has a beer sitting next to him, and the irony is totally lost.

I mean the multiple studies that show a correlation between long term marijuana use and psychosis.

Unfortunately, we're still at the stage with convincing liberals and libertarians that yes, weed can and is bad for your health. Though one can make the argument that the government shouldn't be controlling what one does to themselves. That is of course, contingent on how adverse said effects are on oneself, or even others.

I will say that when it comes to the "drug war", the slippery slope does indeed exist. We're getting to a point now where hard drugs have gotten decriminalized at the state level (Oregon). Because apparently it's "safer" when junkies shoot up in more regulated places to prevent deaths from ODs. Where people like them shouldn't be stigmatized so that they can get help. Etc.

Does that sound familiar? I hope that it does to anyone who frequents this site. Since these are very similar arguments you hear when it comes to pedophiles and the LGBT(Insert new letters here). Those parallels have been there for decades. Unfortunately, since the slippery slope argument is considered a fallacy, people just don't think it can happen.

Just rent a car and drive, you're traveling through probably the most geographical beautiful area in the US not the cornfields of Indiana and Illinois.

Could you ship it via USPS? Apparently the feds aren't allowed to "check" them, and if it's from legal to legal, you could do priority shipping and technically since it's legal in both places, there's no laws broken? I don't know.

Beware of the crossing state lines thing wrt that not being federally legal thing. Granted, this perception is from your television shows, but damn, Crossing State Lines seems to be a big-ass crime, and though pot might be legal in both states, they might not allow import from one state to another .. and the actual boundary is probably considered federal jurisdiction. :P I think I've heard that some places might have booze laws like that (independent of whether a county/given jurisdiction is "dry" or not) - legal to buy and possess, but not for moving over state lines.

That being said, I wouldn't fly with it until the other Washington does something about it on the federal level. And if you do drive, check your lights often so there's no reason to stopcheck you. Or just go the "mail it" route, that's probably safest of all, if your government isn't so snoopy about mail.

In response to the replies, thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

I don't have a car or a drivers license, so there's no chance I'm driving. I already did send a package, but it was intended for someone else, I guess I could pinch a few.

And I think I'm just going to roll a few in a tube+tobacco stuffer thingy, and add them into a pack of smokes in the suitcase.

Mylar bags are what most international drug shippers use for smaller amounts. Not sure about bulk.

Coffee. Mix up some coffee grounds, stick 'em in a coffee can.

There might always be dogs.

This is Seattle, no weed sniffing dogs here. I can't imagine how exhausted a weed sniffing dog would be around here, he'd just run himself in circles till he keeled over.

I mean for the airport, since it's federal jurisdiction, wouldn't it be? Or would it have to be an international airport? I never flew with weed, only moved it by ground.

Otherwise, the mail is a good idea, but as an older Canadian, I still get that spooky "the RCMP opens mail" vibe left over from the freakin' FLQ Crisis (and frankly, the War Measures Act wasn't actually lifted until the Mulroney era .. PET conveniently "forgot" to lift it, apparently.)

I did have Canadian Border Services open up a box I got from the Netherlands once, however. There was red tape announcing whose tape it was all over the box when I got it, heh. It was a fancy bong, legal in this province (I think "paraphenalia" was made illegal in Ontario just before I ditched that hole 20-odd years ago.)
