This whole mindset of sheltering people from opposition is really the root of the problem. It's just going to get worse too. Kids grow up in the subverted walled garden internet from birth now. People need to be exposed to different opinions and different levels of crazy so they learn to discern things for themselves. If I had to guess a lot of us on this site are a tiny bit older and were the 12 year olds going on to the internet before it was infested with "safe" social media and you had no idea what sort of crazy stuff you'd come across at times. From that experience, you learn.

Anyone who tells me to avoid interaction or discussion with someone I immediately assume has an agenda to push. If you are so certain in your knowledge, let them go hear other viewpoints then argue them. The only reason not to is if you're afraid it will discredit you.

Yeah, I know. People that think for themselves threaten the power of those that want to think for them.

Encyclopedia Dramatica was a thing already when I got access to Internet in my early teens. Fuck this "make the Internet a safe space for kids" manipulative bullshit. The rules were simple : don't share your real name or where you live online. Don't give credit info to shady places. The slightest doubt = Install nothing as to avoid malware/spywares. It's not complicated. Yes kids will see boobs. Boo-hoo get over it.

But Megacorps just have to agressively try to make the Internet conform to their real-ID-tied controlled products.

Now kids tell their whole life in the open, and the place where bullied kids could catch a break from HS drama is now permanent HS drama where the IRL bubble overlaps.

I was still a massively left-wing bleeding heart despite lol-ing at the gore, trash and un-PC humour over there. Leftists need to give-up the retarded moral panic around jokes and their compulsion to suffocate kids in their ideological warded garden hoping they can never think outside their box.

Except at the time, Leftists were in favor of freedom of expression. I didn't leave the Left as much as the Left went batshit insane.

I didn't leave the Left as much as the Left went batshit insane.

There's a ton of truth to that. I always leaned right myself but only slightly. Now the left sees me as pretty much a far right nut-job because I want heinous things like free speech.

I'm also apparently more of an old fart than I thought. When I first got the Internet, Google was not yet a thing.

When I first got the Internet, Google was not yet a thing.

Old Internet Farts Unite! I can still recall the days when at the bottom of Yahoo!'s search page it said "Powered by Google", and before that I had the fun of dealing with a running a UNIX terminal emulator on a PC on my university's network to connect to the larger university that actually housed the system. I experienced the Eternal September, and quite honestly the Internet has been worse for wear ever since.

This is absurd: study a movement, but not by interacting with them, because they're bots and you should believe in your ability to speak truth to power... ???

Hi, #comm575! If you'd like to actually learn about gamergate and its impact, I strongly suggest you reach out to the people who were there. Beware of professors who tell you not to talk to other people.

The first lesson you should learn about gamergate is that if your professor thought it was a good idea to discuss on Twitter, then your professor doesn't know gamergate. Winking face#comm575

Hi there! I've co-authored a peer-reviewed quantitative analysis of gamergate (link). Do you not think it odd to educate people about a movement with instructions to not talk to people who were involved in the movement?

"speak truth to power" are you FUCKING kidding me? Gamergaters are the ones that are speaking truth to power, Gamergate is the grassroots movement with no big institutional power or backing and its these communist jackasses controlling these media and institutions that are the ones in power.

"speak truth to power"

read the original. That's not what they wrote. It's actually worse.

"speak back to power"? Says the ones in power? They are completely and BEYOND unbelievable. Communist think they can simultaneously be in power whilst still playing the victim and trying to be the "resistance" and still acting like they are "fighting the power" when they are actually punching down against people with less power.

Any potential voter fraud aside. The state of the USA and the last few elections shows that they indeed can do it and have a substantial amount of people believe them.

It's not that surprising really. Nobody wants to be the resistance. They'll say so but being the resistance sucks. You get jailed and/or killed. Larping as resistance on the other hand is cool. You get to pretend you are all virtuous while constantly getting high fives from everyone.

They are indeed larping as the "resistance". Their "resistance" is not a resistance they get a high out of "being virtuous" and they sacrifice nothing , get praised by the powers, and they are supported by all the powerful institutions. Being an actual resistance is actually hard ,without big institutional power backing and with actual struggle, sacrifice and often hopelessness when things seem impossible and you feel cornered by the actual aggressors

If not for the Communist autocracies that keep on calling themselves The Revolution decades later, I'd say it's unbelievable as well.

They are speaking truth to power. A more fundamental truth: they submit, and will believe whatever power wants them to believe, as long as they get to be the ones guarding the concentration camps instead of in them.

I don't quite understand what you mean. Im pretty sure speaking "truth to power" basically means "challenging people in power by telling them the truth"

▲ 4 ▼
– APDSmith 4 points 5 years ago +4 / -0

It generally does, but they're not lying by letting people in power know that they'll be loyal servants for as long as they're in power.

I wonder how much of a shitfit San Francisco State University would throw if a similar course assessed cancel culture and the like without bothering to engage that side for their take on things like the deaths of Alec Holowka and August Ames.

Strangely enough, a course similar to this redpilled me a bit further. I was already a center right conservative but I was taking a master's course in 2015 that went into gamer gate.

Looking back, most of the gg section was bullshit (ie gamers are dead, your princess is in another castle, Anita at the UN), but there were a couple of studies that were surprisingly fairly unbiased. One of the articles mentioned Sargon of Akkad and Milo Yiannopoulos and how their claims about Anita Sarkesian using her victimhood platform to rake in donations was essentially true. It was weird to see the name Sargon of Akkad cited in a scholarly article so I looked him up. After that I was hooked and kept learning more about gg.

That course actually kind of changed my life.

Please note that they explicitly didn't say "speak truth to power"

They said "speak back to power"

I'm sure this isn't an accident

i feel like someone on our side needs to write an article about gamergate to document what ACTUALLY happened and not let these shitty media and institutions lie and completely destroy its name. Dont let them rewrite history.

I know they didn't actually say the phrase "truth to power" in this case. But leftists have really found a way to even ruin the word "truth". Aside from the aforementioned phrase as a means for them to claim victimhood. I really hate when someone uses the term "my truth".

First off, we already have a perfectly good term for what they're supposed to mean when they say "my truth". That being "my side of the story". Secondly, it's a bullshit thing to say because there's only one truth, the truth. It's almost like it's a weasel word to try and get people to be on your side despite what actually happened. It's about as vapid as when people say something is "their opinion" as if that's a meaningful defense against criticism.
