Honest answer? The convention center in Portland has the rights to every convention in Oregon. No other building is allowed to replace or challenge it. This is why some Oregon conventions are held in Vancouver Washington.
The big thing is realizing how large businesses have taken over the convention scene. If it says Comic Con it is owned by the same people as PAX and E3.
For the Pacific Northwest I would recommend the Northwest Pinball and Arcade Show in Tacoma. 400+ arcade games set free to play and lots of people talking about pinball.
The Portland Retro Gaming Expo is awesome. They tend to have 200 arcade games, a large console gaming area, other areas to game in, contests, shows and everything else. Run by locals and a ton of fun to attend.

The fan made film was released nearly a decade ago.
They were filmed at the same time and released at different times. If they needed set work they filmed all of the scenes in that set for all the movies, ECT. It's not as easy to get out of that quagmire as it seems.
All that said, I got really tired of the Dwarves = Scots joke. When Billy Connolly showed up I wondered if Craig Ferguson just wasn't available at the time. It was obvious they wanted a lighter movie than LotR but didn't take the time to figure it all out before filming.
You should see what it's like organizing and setting up a convention. I used to do that as a hobby, and nearly as a job.

It's always been this way. I recently finished the McCoy protest stories from Doctor Who. It was all very anti war, do as we say, socialism will save the world, kill conservatives. I wish I was joking about that last one. I'm on the Fights Cthulhu while saying malaprops stories. I've read that they wanted to make Ace Gay if they had continued the show.
British TV is having problems anyway. Cats Does Countdown may be cancelled. The only big name left is Taskmaster and it's mostly on YouTube.
