I thought it was Reagan who did it - to save money or some shit. I don't remember it having ANYTHING at all to do with lobotomies and shock treatment, which had ALREADY BEEN OUTLAWED. Shit, I think they had stopped doing it by the time the Cuckoo's Nest movie came out (and that wasn't any protest about mental asylums, either; the book, at least, was meant to warn Kesey's hippie friends not to take the "insanity plea" because of the thought that one can just cruise their way back out sooner than a jail term would end. Which is exactly what Funnyface main character thought. What a maroon.)
But the second part is correct, it's the Left going after cops now because "bad stuff".

The book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, is based as fuck. It called out the medicalization of "toxic masculinity" and the dangers of female tyranny over 50 years ago.
See, everyone reads Nurse Ratched wrong. And in the book, we're seeing her through Chief Broom's eyes; in the movie, through the sleazy criminal's.
Remember that everyone except Jack Nicholson and Chief Broom were there voluntarily. They signed their own selves in, which means they can sign their own selves out pretty much any time they wish (as long as their doctor deems them harmless to themselves and others.)
But when someone else - such as the police, or the courts - sign you in, you're in until they damn well decide to let you go. Chief Broom had serious mental issues (he thought everyone else but him was some kind of robot), and was actually dangerous. Ratched knew this.
She also knew that McDummy was sleazeball repeat offender who was trying to abuse the system; no mental illness, just a petty criminal jackass typical hippie of the sort we're seeing still. I have known people like this, they just don't care, and they keep this mentality well past their 40s.
Ratched is mostly working for the salvagable ones, the ones who checked themselves in - the ones who WANT to be helped. And part of that help is keeping them on a kind of schedule, and I don't think I can explain properly just how important that is, when you're not in a position to take it for granted, and you're basically left on your own devices ...

That being said, there's no defending lobotomies and shock treatments, but as I said, those were already been legislated out. But keep in mind that psychologists usually have their own pathologies that run towards "cruel streak", look at what they do to non-humans, ffs. They love shocking living, feeling beings.
I disagree. Mental illness can be a very subjective thing. Don't forget the the DSM recently classified "toxic masculinity" as a mental illness. Do you really want a group of academics to be able to take away someone's liberty when they have committed no crime? If someone is not a proven danger to others, they ought to have the freedom to live their lives as they wish, even if they have a mental illness.
In comparison, only 15% of people diagnosed with clinical depression end up committing suicide.
Yeah, I meant "only" for the sake of comparison. My point being, depression is widely thought of as the "suicide mental illness," but gender identity disorder has nearly 3x the suicide rate.

It kinda reminds me of people who get a shitload of plastic surgery to the point where they barely look human and think they need more plastic surgery to feel better but it doesn't because they have an obvious mental problem and you can't fix that with surgery.

i think you have hit the nail on the head there, everyone else tends to try to as best they can operate on consistent positions/logic and hence doesnt become a hypocrite since your position/ideals are generally the result of what the principle you upheld to.
for example, 5 white people beating a black person for being black i find as equally repugnant and willing to condemn as the reverse, because it's racism i am opposed to as a principle not because "its the right or wrong target"

It's because they don't actually care about any of these groups. Not as the groups that they actually are, they care only about the idealised representation that they feel must be driven forwards - and is only achievable in the world they wish to impose upon every single other person, that vast mass of people who haven't educated themselves into slavish allegiance to their own ideology, which of course, in it's own idealised representation, will result in the elimination of hunger and want across the world! It's quite a shame that us peons in the real world will be stuck with the real-world implementation of this ideology which has, in every attempt, resulted in piles of bodies too numerous to count and a devastated country once the ideological shackles are thrown off.
If they actually cared they'd stop and listen to trans people that disagree with them, rather than either ignoring them, deplatforming them (which is an attempt to force you to ignore them, whether you wanted to or not) or vilifying them and trying to drive them out of the public square.
