The French know how to deal with this, as they've done it before. They invented a tool for this and used it on the country's leaders in the past. That's the only way it ends.
Actually that tool was only used to go on a murderous rampage against anyone that was perceived to be enemies of the new republic. So in this case it would be used to kill everyone that tries to change anything about the current situation.
The age of terror! Robespierre killed far more wrong thinkers and regular citizens than government.

What the fuck is taking them so long to start? I'm guessing modern militaries are too overpowered for random citizens to stand up against them, which scares most people

There is a reason even several years ago, 2/3 of the public backed the letter of the generals.
