This is like if Roblox or Bluesky was forced to age verify because they allowed the problem to get so bad yet 4chan and YouTube didn't because even at their worst they weren't this bad.
Though I'd rather they just did discovery and started arresting staff as I can bet many ALLOWED it to get this bad and even participated.

Age verification won't help much at these companies that encourage grooming.
You can't make a horse drink water. They'll just do it by forum and let groomers open new forums when one gets put into adult-only mode.
Section 230 is the problem. It should at least be like the DMCA where if they receive a report of content that violates their own content policy they have to take it down immediately for review and if they put it back they're legally liable for it.
They should also be responsible for patterns of behavior. LBRY for instance if you get an adult content strike they put all your content as adult-only. If Discord doesn't do something similar they should be legally liable; if somebody was grooming and they let them open a new public forum or post in a non-adult one then Discord should be held at least contributorily responsible.
That sounds a lot better, we really just need to be able to go 'you allowed this to happen, now you get less privileges'
If a company can just govern itself effectively, they should be left alone only having to pay the required taxes (we're not getting rid of them anytime soon), as I said before, no one is complaining about Steam.
Discord is garbage, I hate what it’s done to the internet, and I’d like nothing more to see it die a quick but excruciatingly painful death. It’s destroyed so many types of communities, and I don’t even know why. I’ve not once understood the point of taking down entire websites to migrate to a fancy IRC client.
I can’t support it being like this though, because the precedent of connecting all speech on the internet to ID, real names, etc is worse than everything Discord has already done.
I uninstalled that shit when this topic was first being threatened by them. Haven't even thought about it until now. Most of my friends stuck around but, as I get older, I guess I just enjoy games solo now, to be honest. Competitive games aren't even fun anymore due to the density of cheaters and people without lives/jobs.
It just sucks that every forum group moved to discord instead of keeping forums going or creating newer ones when the old get overly censored. If this goes any further. I'm just going to only go to this site and a couple news sites, otherwise no more internet.
I think that started it for me quitting all of that now too. I mean how do you even dare to compete against someone who that game is their entire life? That seems to have become normal now. I don't know when this culture of obsession became such a thing or maybe I just never noticed. I'm not one to really judge anyone for liking something as long as it isn't just totally immoral (e.g. pedos, faggots, niggerism, etc) but with a key caveat that it one niche cannot be the core of your identity. Be well rounded.
