The Alex Fields thing is a bit complicated. He was definitely overcharged, and doesn't deserve his current situation.
There was also a ton of misinformation from both sides, so it's hard for me to unequivocally declare him completely innocent, either. I simply don't know.
I think the fact that he mainly hit another car, and not the crowd, is a bit mark in his favor. He's either an incredibly incompetent terrorist, or not a terrorist.
His car was definitely attacked, but a lot of the videos have been removed, so it's hard to say if it was attacked before or after the incident. I'm thinking before, but you could definitely make the counterargument too.
Lastly, and most importantly perhaps, he was definitely threatened previously. A leftist professor or TA (forget which) bragged openly about waving a rifle in his face before the incident. So Alex Fields definitely had a fucking gun pointed at him some time before he sped into the car/crowd.

Remind me next week when I get back from Magfest and I'll see if I can dig out the .gif I have buried somewhere in my unsorted meme folder. If I recall correctly it was pretty clear his car got smacked with a bludgeon before he started hauling ass through that crowd.
I'm also under the impression that it happened first, but I've argued with leftists that said the video was reversed or something...and since I couldn't find the video, I can't say for sure either way.
But my impression at the time was also that he was attacked first, panicked, and drove forward into another car.
Yes I've seen this video before and then it vanished from the internet one day, it was hard to tell exactly what item was used, but it could have been a plank, a bat, or even a large stick of some kind. You could even hear the impact of it on the car in the video.
Hate crime for political ideology, or something else? If it's the former, it makes me wonder why the countless attacks on anyone on the right never get charged that way.
I’ve got the video of the leftist professor if anybody wants it.
Note also, the police put up barricades on both side of the protest march to keep the protesters safe. Fields did not drive through a barricade. So what happened? Antifa moved the barricades in order to funnel traffic in. Fields was literally just trying to go home.

Most times I have no idea what to believe, because it's one side saying A and the other side saying B - and I don't want to reflexively side with 'my tribe' (which I know also lies a lot).

I wonder if this was presented to the jury, and if not, if it could be grounds for a new trial.

In this case, we had video of the whole incident. An angry, armed, leftist mob was attacking cars, as they like to do, and he crashed into another car while trying to get away. None of the videos even show him making physical contact with the fatass who died.
The real reason why he was railroaded like that was because he was a member of Vanguard America, one of the groups organizing the protest and the predecessor to Patriot Front. They weren't just trying a man named Fields, they were trying a stand-in for the entire American right.

Absolutely, that would be awesome.

He got fucked with 29 Federal Hate Crime charges.
Yup. Like I said, definitely overcharged. Does not deserve that in the slightest.
If he did do wrong, and it wasn't panic/self defense, he should still be charges in line with other similar incidents.
It was absolutely political, even if he were definitely a murderer.
Rule of law means nothing, if it's not applied equally.
Who was in charge of the federal government that did that to him again?

IIRC the still frame of him hitting the crowd shows his brake lights on.

He got 400+ years, they'll absolutely never give him a new trial, if they can help it. Regardless of the facts.
