Why is Housing so Unaffordable? {Spoiler: J-words and Boomers}- It's not just a meme, there is truth to it (www.youtube.com)

This is just another line go up boomer moment. Every single sane person understands that constant growth is untenable, the government has intentionally tried delaying this by red taping competition and flat out allowing structural behemoths to undersell competition at a loss to corner the market (Amazon did this repeatedly). Housing is no different, we now have the shittiest new builds possible because government has regulated building to a crawl, destroying any competitors or market. So we now get illegal alien slop houses because there is no industry for building. Trump railed about this exact thing in 2016 and is now the main perpetrator of it in 2026. Boomers and banks don’t want a realistic 30-50% drop in home prices because their retirement and net worth is tied into them having scarcity in the market. This is also why boomers demand no property tax, they are trying to vampire as much resources as possible while fucking over their kids and grandkids (which they barely had to begin with because boomers were the actual “me” generation.

All that regulation and quality just keeps nosediving. Almost as if the regulation has some other purpose.

This is also why boomers demand no property tax

Nah, property tax has always been bullshit. I bought the thing, that means I own it. If I have to perpetually rent it from the government then I don't own it.

Hate to break it to you but property tax is essential to actual America, you’re renting land from the government so you have to pay for that government to function and have a standing military, this is also why voting was restricted to land owners. If you want to outright own something then create your own country of anarcho capitalists and see how quickly “ownership” means jack shit without the ability to enforce it.

Property tax is not only unethical but it prices out poor people from buying homes and gaining wealth. There are at least a dozen other taxes that we pay that are far more ethical than property tax, and none of them really even matter since the Federal Reserve can just print infinite money out of thin air.

The government is literally just stealing our money to use for fraud and kickbacks. It's not funding our army, it's not paving our roads, and it's certainly not being used to improve our country. We already saw proof of this with DOGE, and when you look at the actual expenditures, you can see that basic necessary services are a tiny amount of the budget. Most of it is Social Security, which is a ponzi scheme that any private citizen would be thrown in prison for if they tried it, and Medicare. Even our gigantic military isn't as big as healthcare.

Our government is insanely bloated, inefficient, and run by foreign powers for their own ends. So yeah, if getting rid of property tax is enough to cripple that, then by all means let it fall.

Property tax is not only unethical but it prices out poor people from buying homes and gaining wealth.

This is hilariously false and some made up communist agitprop slop. Property tax has existed in the entirety of the US and magically didn’t stop “poor people” from buying homes for centuries or gaining wealth. Also, fun fact, property taxes are what kept high trust areas of the US functioning for decades and what established the suburbs. If you want everywhere to look like south side Chicago just eliminate property taxes in your area, lolbert.

There are at least a dozen other taxes that we pay that are far more ethical than property tax, and none of them really even matter since the Federal Reserve can just print infinite money out of thin air.

Complete opposite of the truth, income, sale, estate, and every other tax are far more unethical. Land tax was the original tax because it funded what was considered common good, everything else was theft added on top. If you knew jack shit about the fed you would know they desperately need those other taxes to keep their grift going.

The government is literally just stealing our money to use for fraud and kickbacks. It's not funding our army, it's not paving our roads, and it's certainly not being used to improve our country. Everything you just said has zero to do with property taxes. Property taxes are local then state.

Our government is insanely bloated, inefficient, and run by foreign powers for their own ends. So yeah, if getting rid of property tax is enough to cripple that, then by all means let it fall.

It wouldn’t, you would be helping the hordes not stopping them. You want to cripple them then go after payroll taxes and ss/medicare tax.

Property tax in practice gets used to steal people`s land. Local counties have been caught endlessly raising property tax to force the land owners to sell. They then lower the property tax after the person they wanted to own the land owns the land.

This is literally every tax in a low trust society.

Property tax also gets used as a way to fun random things that should not be funded. To increase the amount of money flowing through local counties so that those local counties can have a budget for corrupt politicians, the state would hand out money but only to local counties with a high enough property tax. This would be used to justify increasing the property tax across the state. They would do this repeatedly to ever increase the property tax.

Again, every single tax in a low trust society did this. You’re complaining about how the tax is being abused, every tax is abused.

There are better way to to raise tax reveanue that can`t be abused. Sales tax is one of them as people pay more attention to sales tax.

This is hilariously untrue. Sales tax is the single most abused tax there is. If you don’t believe me, look into how many different sales taxes there are varying on products and how surges in sales taxes on specific items (luxury tax for example) have completely destroyed industries because even rich people aren’t going to buy luxury goods when the government slaps an accrued 45% luxury tax on it. People pay attention to a 6-8% sales tax on a tv, they don’t pay attention to the 8-10 sales taxes already paid for just to make that tv from various parts, they instead complain about the final price.

No. The founding fathers would've scoffed at the idea of allowing renters to vote while taxing property owners. Taxing property only applied when it was tied to your ability to vote.

And it's healthy for the market. A deed has no maintenance cost, and an unmaintained structure is a loss to potential owners. There needs to be some mechanisms to discourage unproductive hoarding of land. It's not like we can make more. Land has to filter back into the market somehow.

Some kind of ‘unimproved Land tax’ with a progressive lower end cut-off/1 home exception, if there were lower taxes generally? In addition to tarrifs. That would be tolerable, and a vast improvement on what we have.

Well, property tax IS bullshit.

But Boomers think they’re financial wizards and either want to spend all their money on themselves or be buried with it.

Well if housing would be affordable all real estate investors would lose money and we wouldn't want that now would we. Just go for a 50 year mortgage! Art of the deal!

Trump truly cares about the little man. :')

Wanna know why home builders don't build 1300 square foot starter homes any more? Code compliance, permit costs and zoning. Who makes permits expensive, codes expensive to meet, and influences zoning? Older voters, through their city council. It may be boomers doing it now, but it was Greatest Generation doing it before them, and they put most of these hurdles into place, not boomers.

Cheap houses are still available all across the country, but they are not on the coasts, or in the big cities, where the jobs are. They are in small town USA, where the local economies were all devastated by industry off shoring.
