Its the only reason it is a story, as we have hundreds if not thousands of cases of "you called him a nigger, so he was justified" dating back quite a while. I knew a few of them growing up, it was considered "fighting words" and we all just knew it.
The legal concept of "fighting words" strikes me as dumb, or at the very least it's being flagrantly and maliciously exploited to such a degree that it needs to be sent back for review.
Or that changing the suffix "er" to an "a" somehow is the difference between simply being a cringe wigger vs being banned from polite society for decades.
Its just an expansion of "crime of passion" wherein we all understand that certain things are so powerful at evoking our emotions that its a mitigating factor on what you do in that state. Like if you walk in on your wife cheating on you, its still wrong to kill him and/or her, but we get it so we let you off lighter.
Its one of many things that works fine in a proper society, where we get it is enough to keep things functional instead of needing to autistically write every letter of every law. But we don't live in that, so it exists just to let niggers and Lefties off with violence over words.
We can't legally say "you can kill people under these subjective circumstances" because then people will abuse whatever loophole we leave open and make a whole entire fucking mess of nonsense.
But we get it, and so we don't hold them nearly as accountable or deserving of punishment if at all. We don't need the law to handle this, because we as a Western people were enlightened enough at some point in the past to handle Juries of our peers to make obvious choices like that.

I mean, saying things like threatening to murder someone is definitely fighting words, if not grounds for worse.
