I came across one of those articles from a shill website that have the "these movies from past decades that everyone loved are actually bad" theme. They criticized Gods Must Be Crazy for "glorifying colonialism". Made me want to rewatch since I haven't seen it as a kid and it was one of the movies we rented from blockbuster as a family and enjoyed (at least one Friday a month we would go to blockbuster and get pizza) we got a lot of laughs from the movie.
I found that the movie is on youtube and there are parts 2, 3, and 4 that I plan to watch eventually. I watched it and enjoyed it as much as I did before. Nice funny movie about a tribesman trying to get rid of the evil coca cola bottle by throwing it off the edge of the Earth.
Definitely worth a watch if y'all have the time. Hopefully those articles that serve to crap on what came before only to shill for the slop that is out today makes people go watch those movies they are attacking.
Yeah, it's one of the most unique comedies of all time. A great example of the 90's - every group was fair game, but the jokes were always good-natured.
Go back ten years, it was released in 1980
I know this is off topic but the other day I got super nostalgic and really missed going to Blockbuster as a kid. Going was such an event and getting games ensured you'd have something to do, because you had to beat as much of that game as possible in 3 days. I even miss seeing other people's saved files on the physical media itself.
And browsing the box art of the tapes was a cool experience. My poor dad had to listen to us beg for the overpriced small size snacks.
Agreed. I miss it. I moved to my area in 09 and there was still a blockbuster by the grocery store. They had cheap used PS2 games I’d buy. They went out of business in 2010 and had a going out of business sell and were selling PS1 and PS2 games for like 1 or 2 bucks and DVDs for 50 cents. I spent almost 100 that day.
hell, i even miss the sad video store/sun tan place we had.
If you want to suffer from major nostalgia for a time that is no more, check out this video of Sam Reid visiting the last blockbuster video store and reliving moments from his childhood. I literally cried , we had no idea how good we had it at the time.

The story behind the lead actors an interesting one, him being a genuine bushman they recruited to star in the movie.
I remember hearing that he was a genuine bushman. Need to look him up
I loved that movie and it did not glorify colonialism. If anything, I remember it to criticized western society as being too complex and requiring kids to love put 1 third of their lives in prison schools just to survive.
Yea I have no idea how they came up with that except that it was someone who sees race or sex in everything
I don't remember the Coca Cola bottle being evil, just that it brought out avarice in those who saw it - making them evil. The lead being a sort of Frodo carrying it without being corrupted.
Great film with a story worth telling.
Agreed. I should’ve used quotation marks around evil. He perceived it as evil due to the negative influence on the tribe. Definitely like Frodo on a quest
I remember loving the first as a child.
The second was a disappointment, both to me as a child and the adults watching. Mostly slapstick, if I recall, but if it is free on youtube, you might as well give it a watch if you wish.
The slapstick is pretty funny in the second one though. Also some visually memorable moments like when one of the kids makes herself taller with a piece of bark so the hyena won't eat her.
Offhand the bit I remember most is the tribesman driving the car backwards
Any other "problematic" old movies on the list? I haven't seen The gods ... in it's entirety so I'll add it to the list. Unfortunately a lot of old media is impossible to find, all the big media retailers want you to buy it or don't have it at all. For example, Fraggle Rock, original Blues Clues, and Mister Rogers. I keep a VHS collection but even thrift stores don't always sell tapes.
Off the top of my head they had issues with Police Academy and Revenge of the nerds
Police Academy was a favorite back when I was a kid. I guess blacks can't be funny anymore, they have to be serious and strong.
True. Although the person writing the article whined about them sneaking a look at the women in the showers and the guy saying there are an awful lot of spades around here and then he saw Hightower and said and that’s a good thing
The people that use that word enough that I notice they use that word, get on my God damn nerves.
Yeah, those pearl clutching types are aggravating.
Now you can progress to other films like cannibal holocaust.
No, stop that. It is a gross movie.
Fine. Just Human Centipede then.
Never heard of it.
It shows even savage tribesmen know how to deal with the media.
That movie made me want to cook and eat an ostrich egg... probably tastes like disappointment
Probably tastes like your family isn't big enough for that breakfast!
Most likely but I can imagine how great that scrambled egg would be with bacon
Are not ostrich farms not that uncommon in the west? It's probably not that hard to find.
I've only seen the first and sequel. I enjoyed it.
Someone else mentioned blockbuster and I find it really sad that I don't have an interest in videos like I did back in the day. Vampire out for revenge? Rent to see that low budget classic.
Vampire out for revenge, but on Netflix. The villain is white and straight, and we will have lectures on how evil he is.
Yep they were great for finding low budget stuff. Nowadays you can find it on Tubi. They have a ton of older low budget movies I’ve never heard of
I'm so sad the Scooby Doo Olympics was taken off.
Me and my mother don't talk about movies all that much but that film cracks her up, so I have a little fondness for that movie.
Yea. Definitely has its charm
You only watched the first quarter of the movie?
No. I saw the whole movie. I didn’t know there were sequels
Wait. What?
looks it up
Holy crap, I didn't know this either. You never hear about those.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
No problem. I can see how it looked like I’d only seen the first quarter
I like ScreenRant. I post shit to c/StarTrek because I read it there, and give it a shot. My k8ds tell me they must be using AI for GameRant though because they catch a whole lot of errors. What site do you use? I like the summaries available to read with a dash of opinion. Not opinion with a speck of summary.
Haven’t looked at Screenrant in a while. They seem to be shills. Or at least I’ve never seen them criticize Disney Star Wars or Nu trek. To be fair lately they have had praise for Star Wars EU when before they told fans to forget it and embrace Disney’s stuff
I only watch Picard because Screenrant said Riker took over producing, and it wasn't stupid anymore. I loved it! I skipped the first season, and it still made sense.
I plan on watching season 3. Someone told me since I like TNG I would enjoy it.
That's exactly why I enjoyed it!
Is that a good Star Trek group? I’ve actually been looking for one for pre nu trek fans
I like it. It's not as busy to show up when you sort by new.
