Didn't they race swap someone already? I remember writing this show off immediately for some reason, and I can't even remember why even though I'm vindicated here.
Because even if you ignore the race swaps it still looks like shit. A live action adaptation of an anime like One Piece is pretty much impossible to pull off unless you spend ungodly amounts of money on top-tier CGI. Which Netflix obviously didn't do.
This is one of those shows where generating wacky and over-the-top backdrops using AI video generators would make sense. Slap it on an LED volume and maybe they could save some costs while still capturing some of the wackiness of the show (but that would only be for the background settings -- to your point, they would still have to spend a crap ton on character CGI).
At that point they may as well just stick with the anime and avoid live-action altogether.

Exactly. Give us a remake of the anime without fillers and with god-tier animation in every episode instead of a pointless, shitty live-action adaptation.
Honestly, despite being a huge One Piece fan (or perhaps because of that) I wrote the show off on concept alone. One Piece has far too many outrageous physical effects which are actually important to the story, that can never be captured by live action, such as how character sizes can vary significantly throughout a scene to emphasize that character's impact upon the narrative at the moment. A lot of the physical comedy and timing has already failed to be translated to the anime, so the live action won't do that any better, being another 'animated' format.
All of that said, I'm actually happy that the live action exists. One Piece is as successful as it is largely because the story is not just good, but actually contains some really damn important philosophical concepts. If a certain percentage of live action viewers will find themselves drawn to explore those ideas in more depth, where otherwise they would never engage with such things, that would be great.
Also, apparently the legendary Studio Wit is producing a total remake of the entire anime with a strong commitment to making it top quality. So die hard fans do have something great to look forward to themselves.
I disagree with your position but if you want some laughs look at cholos (and Mexicans in general) fondness for Dragon Ball Z. They've got high status celebrities taking nicknames like "Goku."

yes they did. Nami's sister Nojiko and Lucky Roux from Shank's crew

Live Action was not needed in the first place.

They race-swapped damn near the whole cast. Luffy was Columbian or some shit.

I told people not to be excited for the live action one piece. And it always falls on deaf ears until reality hits them again.
The Netflix Paradigm is a real thing.
If they want subversion to actually land, the first season is decent (to an extent).
The second season typically goes full woke.
This has happened so many times I've completely lost count.
As you said, it's baffling anyone would have expected different from Netflix.
How many times do you have to be taught the lesson about making reposts?

I don't know if this is even 3D looking at the comparison...
You've got it backwards, anime social acceptance is higher than ever. A lot of normies I know are anime watchers casually.

I mean, the thing about One Piece is that a lot of people started following it when they were actually teens.
Anyone still paying for Netflix is a lost cause.
They’ll never learn, because as far as they’re concerned it’s $150m+ well spent.
I can already hear "but she lives in the desert!"
I guess this is their payback for casting Emily Rudd as Nami
