I know I remember bits and pieces from when I was a kid and my dad was watching it, but I never actually sat and watched it all the way through. Great movie, and I loved the scene with John Candy in the car jamming to Mess Around by Ray Charles as well as the ending. Don't think there is any John Candy movie I don't like. Also think I will make this a Thanksgiving week tradition since there aren't that many Thanksgiving themed movies.

John Hughes is one of the best writer directors of all time. His filmography is honestly incredible.
Absolutely!
I do love the guy and losing him was rough if you were a kid in the 80s when it happened. He was at the height of his career, hit after hit, and then one day he was just gone.
That said, his struggle with alcoholism was pretty severe. In his later movies he was usually drunk on camera but as a professional alcoholic he was excellent at hiding it.
If you're curious, Google his daughter. She looks exactly like him.
One random internet story:
Used to work with a guy who used to work on SCTV. He told me on his first day on the show he had no idea who anyone was and he was loading some gear onto a cart and was having trouble with some of the heavy stuff.
He saw a larger guy and assumed he was crew and asked him for help. The big guy came over and was helping load up the cart, then someone with a headset ran over and said, "Mr Candy, we we need you in makeup," to which the big guy replied, "I'll be there in a couple minutes, just helping the crew with this."
I heard that story. My favorite story about him. Yea I heard he died in his sleep. I remember in middle school when my Spanish teacher mentioned he had died that Monday.
It's a very charming movie. I particularly enjoy the car rental scene and the scene with the couple warning them about driving the wrong way.
"They keep yelling we're driving the wrong way."
"Ah what do they know they don't even know where we are going?"
"Ohh good point."
Oh yea, that was a fujny scene. Also loved when Candy’s character told Martin how he could be cynical.
Would you care to elaborate? I know Kane is mostly based on Hearst, who wasn't Jewish. And Orson Welles wasn't a jew. I'm asking just for my own edification
Haven’t seen it in over 20 years. Need to rewatch. Really only remember the parts that the Simpsons referenced and rosebud
Fact: earrings in the 80s did look exactly like plastic shower curtain rings
I just watched Career Opportunities. It's got a cameo by John Candy.
He was probably the only decent part of that mess of a movie, aside from Jennifer Connelly's presence.
That’s one I’ve never seen. Although I do find that a bad movie from 80s and 90s will seem really good to me in this day and age for simply having things like men who act like men and women who act like women lol
Agreed, but that was kind of the problem with this one-- the main character acted like a worthless, entitled, incompetent, whiny bitch. And for some reason I'm supposed to root for him and somehow he ends up with Jennifer Connelly despite never actually accomplishing anything.
Also they're trapped in a Target and can't get out. But somehow a couple of thieves managed to get in.
Pretty much on point why i dropped it. Tried it months ago and it just felt bad.
Honestly surprised I’ve never seen this. I get why it went a box office hit
Jennifer Connelly.....ahhhhh moon eyes
❤️❤️❤️
For me, Jennifer Connelly in Career Opportunities is the most attractive a woman has ever been.
She is a beautiful woman
John Candy was a great actor, it would devastate me to learn he was involved with all that crazy hollywood bullshit. lmao.
It documents a time that existed in America that we will never see again. Specifically people lining up for pay phones and getting hotel rooms over the phone. For the record I was born in 1996 but it’s one of my dads favorite movies.
Same here. I keep meaning to rewatch that one, along with John Candy's other movies.
Everything I’ve heard about him is that he was a very nice person. My favorite movie of his is Only the Lonely
I think Candy himself wrote the script for that one
That’s cool! Didnt know that
Look how much of a fan you are, you instinctively liked his writing
Sucks he won’t be in the Spaceballs sequel. Although I hope Mel Brooks has enough influence to stop any current year crap. History of the world part 2 had some.
Someone didn't watch Wagons East.
Oh no. They had to release that one after he was already gone because it was so bad he didn't want it out and the only way it would register with any viewers was because they missed him and might forgive it. I wonder if the alcohol was calling the shots when he took that role.
That’s his last movie right? Still haven’t seen it but I’m sure I could find something to like
It is. Released after he died.
