Unironically, you were safer doing honest reporting in something like penthouse as most people including deep state would've just read the cover, assumed porn and not dig deeper..
Same phenomenon with tabloids. It's where important stories go to die. They don't have a "reputation" so they don't need to be managed too much, although some of them might be limited hangouts.
That is exactly what I was thinking of too. The writers of MIB knew exactly what they were doing when they wrote that scene, and it applies to far more than just newspapers.
Pay attention to your popcorn flicks and fun sci-fi shows, especially those such as Stargate SG1, which had a lot of high-ranking intelligence members provide consultancy for. Because the audience is typically considered "dumber", they can get away with far more esoteric and revealing shit than they can in more cerebral Oscar bait. Many people believe SG1 in particular soft-disclosed secrets concerning aliens, their technology, and travel into deep space.
They even wrote an episode lampooning the idea called "Wormhole X-Treme", which aired 3 days before 9/11.
Hah, I had totally forgotten about that scene but yes. What was going through my mind was the Midnight Sun reporter in Deus Ex. The paper has somewhat of an anti-government bent and the reporter actually seems willing to take you seriously and report on stories the propaganda terminals won't. (spoiler: what you don't find out until later is that he's a spook working the government to monitor you)
I think that's actually why Alex Jones sometimes get genuine information.
People who know that stories will be buried if the go to the media, know that Alex Jones is crazy enough to report it, not give them up as a source, and doesn't care about reprisals.
It's kinda like when the movie Men In Black said the National Enquirer was one of the most accurate journalistic organizations. If you had a fucking crazy story that was true, couldn't be linked back to you, and would get published regardless of the consequences, and WikiLeaks doesn't exist. Well, low-reputation news outlets aren't actually a bad idea.
Edit - Yo, how did I call this entire conversation without reading the thread?

Reminds me of this

Because you're just so very, very stunningly and bravely intelligent.
Nice sarcasm, bro. I'm super impressed.
