You absolutely can do what you want, but you have an obligation to live up to a contract you signed, that said short of legitimate illness you agree to go to work everyday.
Saying Fuck you I do what I want, ultimately means that they also get to say "fuck you I'll do what I want, which is to not pay you for what you worked"...
and that, I am sure you'll agree, is a bad thing and not something we should just say "Fuck you" to..

The embarrassment stems from most adults taking a sick day when they're hung over or overslept and it's too late to get to work on time.
Or as a vacation day. Oh you're sick the two days before your vacation starts? Huh.
Everybody knows what you're doing and that's embarrassing.
A sick day when you actually are sick or saw a doctor is the opposite of embarrassing, but odds are that's not why somebody is out.
