I saw a recent poll done by the usual suspects showing that like 48% of the ticket buyers for comic cons are women and of course the article said that women have every right to nerd out without being bullied. I long ago stopped believing women were getting bullied in nerd spaces or at least the actual bullying is few and far between if that, but these polls are tiresome and they just make me wonder if the people conducting them have ever been to a convention. You still have guys at the booths buying stuff you expect guys to by. Like the small ones I work (selling comic books and vintage toys) as expected, the overwhelming majority of people who buy comic books are guys.
This is like the poll showing that women make up half of comic book fans when they asked if they were interested in comics. During the height of the MCU I saw plenty of people say they were interested in comics but never bought any because most normies like the idea of comic books, star wars, etc. but don't actually do a deeper dive.
Of course we all know the "50% of gamers are women" stat that is constantly thrown around despite the fact when you break it down it makes perfect sense because it shows what games women play versus what games men play.
If only these hobbies could've remained niche, or anyone who does adapt a book series has to face a panel of nerds. I'd love to interrogate the moronic showrunner of Wheel of Time.
It will never cease to amaze me how these companies see a hobby where men are 90% of the audience but apparently you can't make any decisions based on that data, but let one woman buy call of duty and you have to make sure the whole gaming industry caters to her. Shouldn't these massive waves of female fans be self evident? I mean the Marvels should've been just as popular as Barbie with women.... just saying.
Also, it really is a shame that LEGO didn't have the guts to stand by THEIR OWN STUDY!!!
This is my problem with it overall. Men and boys can get along perfectly fine in hobbies, and can even be great friends and companions with each other, do stupid stuff and goof off in the context of a fun hobby. Once women get involved, the dynamic changes and the fun competition becomes a battle for that woman's attention, and causes all sorts of problems for a hobby. Out in the real world, competing for the woman is fine because it drives men to become better versions of themselves, but a hobby is escapist and not meant to be that. You take away that outlet of enjoyment and often tear the hobby apart, all the men with any standing abandon it and eventually the women move on to the next hobby, which if not gatekept will eventually fall.
You can believe women should be property without being a misogynist.
Yea, that is a fucking pain, man does the simping go over the top. Still perhaps it is just me being the social outcast xD but getting people together for lan party's is damn hard these days even when you ensure that no subversive elements get invited.
Imagine being so spineless and simpish that by 2023 you still try to "not be an actual misogynist."
What next? Not hating Lefties because they are still "people"?
I've seen girls ruin social gaming venues twice. The first was at a LAN party when a regular attendee decided to bring his girlfriend. She was repulsive, rude, controlling, and so disgusting that she would burp as loud as she could and then say "Tee-hee 'scuse me!" The guy sitting next to me looked like he was ready to kill her after she did it twice. She was never invited back.
The second time was on a small Discord server with a couple acquaintances. The room was mostly memes, inside jokes and gaming chat; but overall people mostly idled. Then two girls were invited to the server; both of whom have what I assume are selfies for their avatars. Those two girls make up 60% of all new messages, most of which are about themselves. You cannot post anything without at least one of them replying. Any time people connect to voice chat, you can count on them showing up and doing most of the talking. And it's not about gaming.
Last convention I went to was over a year ago I think, might've been two. I only went there for because of certain group attending and rare chance to meet.
But even at that time, from cosplay alone there was a STEEP decline in comic book stuff compared to Anime, gaming related stuff or really really niche independent comics. They've killed SO much of fan interest that a lot of them moved on to Manga and the like as there was hardly anywhere to buy comics but it was packed with Manga everywhere.
There probably is a majority female reader base for comics now that the market for them has shrank down to a fraction of what it was. As for demographics in comic cons, that will get skewed since because it's an event focusing more on hobby (so people with disposable income) you'll get social media types usually cosplaying (as they can get away with sexual dress because character) swarming that event for views while you'll have a few women generally interested usually the non cosplaying types.
What I love about anime and manga is that it understands its audience and has different categories. You are right about plenty of women being into Anime/Manga. I’ve have been able to bond with my nieces over anime/manga this past year. There is an anime convention in the spring I may go to, but as for comics I like the small venues
TBF there are ALOT of women at comic cons because most of the cons have extended to have stuff about tv shows, movies, anime, etc. and they tend to bring in big celebs to draw in as many people as possible. And there is a large segment of women that use it as an excuse to cosplay and dress like a slut. You don't have to be a comic fan to go to comic cons anymore.
That is true. I stopped going to the large ones partly because of that. The smaller ones are a lot more fun
I think looking at the Tales of series in Japan can be rather insightful on this point.
The fan conventions there (Tales of Festival) are well known to be dominated by women, many of whom are fujoshi. But it’s not exactly a secret that the audience that buys the games is overwhelmingly male, and I doubt very many people go around pretending otherwise.
For the most part they seem to understand that in general women and men prefer different things even when it comes to the same franchise.
What does Fujoshi mean again? I have to believe that American companies know that women and men tend yo like different things but they refuse to admit it. Like super hero comics.
Fujoshi (腐女子) literally means rotten girl, and is used to describe yaoi fans. That is to say, women who ship male characters together.
I think US companies are full of a mix of true believers, grifters, and people doing it for ESG reasons. As weird as it is to think, there do seem to be some people who accept the modern junk “science” that male and female brains are the same and the only reason for any differences in preference must be cultural.
Well that’s true. I guess I want to believe otherwise but the evidence shows exactly what you say
On the games front, women play majority mobile games right?
Yes, even their own studies of data says that the platform women play on the most is mobile and the most favorite game is match-3 or similar puzzle games, with farm/family games in between.
That’s what the breakdown showed which makes sense but geez do they overdo it with the endless “girls in gaming” articles
That's right up there with "Nobody plays TF2 anymore." Speaking of which, I plan to play some over Christmas break.
Farmville and Bejeweled, like true gamery gamers.
If you take out match 3 games, visual novels, and those hidden object games that have been sitting on the same shelf at Walmart for 5+ years, women do so little gaming that they're statistically irrelevant.
I'm probably part of the tiny percentage that actually plays RPGs/MMOs then lol
I believe this. Middle aged ladies and young skanks are easily 48% or comic con attendees. Its not young dudes attending the Dr who panels and all that shit
Dr Who used to be massive at comic con but I think they are doing a good job ruining that one
I can believe their are a lot of trannies going to those. Maybe that's it.
That wouldn't surprise me. The trans agenda has been particularly predatory on people on the autistic spectrum, a large number of which love gaming. AGDQ made this trend incredibly obvious and blatant.
You seem to be stuck on the lie, that they repeat, it does not matter for the lie is merely a tool to get more control over culture in this case, you have also seen the lie on more "serious" matter. My point is why do you still expect them to speak truthfully? The higher ups get rewarded for their ignorance and the wormtounges get a chance of promotion.
The small business which does not live in utopia will react accordingly (and the state will force them to be neutralized if needed) and unless you speak to higher ups and can convince them that this deal is a deal with the devil they will not change path.
Can’t argue there. I do keep getting annoyed when I should know better.
Depends on what you define as bullying.
Following the rules of the area and the game, trying to fit in, not trying to inject yourself into everything. Watching and observing if you're allowed to, just to see what a tabletop RPG/Pen and paper RPG/Collector Card Game/etc is like, and what would be expected of it and you.
You would think these would be obvious. But some consider anything negative to be hostile and therefore harassment.
If people would stop wearing their emotions on their sleeves in a new and possibly unknown environment, I can guarantee you the 'harassment and bullying' would drop to near zero.
Completely agree
Most of the women going to conventions are there to whore, whether it be attention whoring or more traditional whoring. A non-trivial chunk are there to be nerds, but women nerding out at cons is more of an afterthought for a lot of them.
How many girls do you see at conventions who aren't doing cosplay or dressing up at some point over the course of the weekend?
Well at the small conventions I work it’s about half and half. I do enjoy the small ones because you have some serious collectors there
Yea, it always annoys me how men get attacked because WNBA has terrible ratings. Since my family is from Oklahoma we will root for Sooners football and even in the spring their softball team.
I know there are women gamers or legit nerds but they liked it as it was. Comic books are probably the best example of catering to a non existent audience
