I was thinking of getting Shenmue 1-3 on Steam because it’s a game I always wanted to play but didn’t have a Dreamcast (was a loyal Sony guy before joining the PC Master Race). Is it a fun game or should I save my money?
Also, I’ve mentioned before that I love the dynasty warriors series. Any other games with that sort of fighting style? I wish it would expand to other parts of the globe. I know it’s nerdy but in the second one I thought it was really cool that it had an encyclopedia with info about the real life of each character. Romance of the Three Kingdoms could make a great mini series
Shenmue is like a prototype of the Yakuza series with Animal.Crossing ideas put in.
Oh ok. I guess I’m still thinking it’s 2000.
I think everyone thinks this.
Shenmue is more of a novelty game than a real amazing thing. The original and all were groundbreaking for their time in terms of how much is was able to simulate, but its not going to feel nearly as impressive without that time context.
Also if you like Musou games then I recommend Drakengard. One of the greatest games of all time, where you can wipe out entire armies on foot or on a dragon while playing the video game equivalent of a schizophenic breakdown of the protag, the game world, and your own mental state.
You best be trolling. One does not play Drakengard, one suffers through it.
That's why I called it a schizophrenic breakdown of a game.
And I've actually 100%'d it plural times, and am of the opinion that the meme of how bad it is is far greater than how bad it actually is. People act like its some unplayable mess, when it really isn't and takes only a modest amount of thinking of "hey I shouldn't use magic on the red ones because they reflect" and "oh I don't actually need to kill every single enemy in my path" and "man I want to use my dragon right now, but that would go poorly."
As shown by the man responsible for the meme himself, Mr. DarkId, calling it a grindfest when grinding is at no point required unless you really suck at it (as it only gets you more health) or are going for Ending E, which you should have a guide open if that's your intent and with so there isn't much grind either. You figure out jump attacks have max speed regardless of weapon, so you use the heaviest (Hymir's Finger) weapon you have as soon as you can to kill everything in between spamming Arioch's Magic because summons don't reflect. At which point it literally becomes Dynasty Warrior's level mindless clearing.
Drakengard is one of the oldest examples of "people get their opinions from Ecelebs" and repeating it over and over. Its certainly a 5/10 game to play, because its boring for 4/5 levels, but its not some completely broken mess.
Agreed. It is art, but it is art best appreciated from a distance. Something to discuss. Something to show people and examine.
But a game that has an anti-war message by making you slog through thousands of deaths to show you how inhumane it is and how only a psychopath could enjoy it, and makes you do it again for worse endings, and which assaults your ears to show you how reality is breaking, is not actually all that fun to play. It's a very interesting idea, to have the gameplay actually reinforce the message like that rather than run counter to it and reward you for it while trying to tell you that it's bad. But also having the game be enjoyable unless you just want to wank yourself off to your art and having resolved 'ludonarrative disonance' is also important and it missed that mark
Taro's later games have managed it far better, and are far more enjoyable to play and listen to.
Sounds fun!
Git gud.
/reads the actual post about joining the PCMasterRace
Oh, you did. Carry on.
Ha! Yes I did
Why not just play the Dreamcast versions with an emulator?
There is a lot of difference on steam?
I don't know, aside from it being far easier to find the Dreamcast versions for free.
Lookup 'kingdom underfire: the crusaders'. It has some similarities with dynasty warriors in the sense that there are battlefields with armies clashing and you can take control of your hero and bash things while heavy metal music plays in the background. The universe is a typical western fantasy thing rather than Chinese so you got Europeans knights fighting orcs and sexy dark elves. I think it can fit what you're looking for. I played it and its standalone expansion (heroes) on the og Xbox but they ported it to PC. Idk if the port is good but the original is great.
That sounds awesome! Thanks!
Also check out Bladestorm. Koei's take on real time battlefield action in the 100 years war as a random mercenary fighting for both sides as their purse commands.
Thanks.
A fighting game, that has a forklift operation minigame, that is considered better gameplay than the actual fighting.
You tell me.
Oh wow. I thought it was an RPG with action
I love the Shenmue games, but they're more about experiencing that little world and having an adventure there with a few quicktime events thrown in than they are about "gameplay".
I own them all but never played the sequels as I personally got a bit sick of third person. So I gave up Souls and other games like this. But it's definitely worth playing if you like 3rd person fighter adventure. I think it used the VF2 fighting engine IIRC - and Hong Kong is well done. But don't pay full price
The Shenmue games inspired the Yakuza games. So I would play them instead. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is much different than the rest of the series. Completely different play style, but honestly my favorite so far.
Fist of the Northstar: Lost Paradise is a bit similar.
For musou, if you don't mind aging graphics, Warriors Orochi 3: Ultimate Definitive has a fucking huge cast. Lots of Dynasty Warriors heroes in there. It's like an ensemble of 4 different musou games.
If you have a Switch, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is fast and fun, and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes combines a musou and like a Final Fantasy Tactics job system into one game. I liked it a lot. It's got 3 different play thrus as well.
I like the One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 and 4 games. Both musou. They each got their own charm and strengths. Though, 3 is getting a bit long in the tooth now, and 4 feels DLC grabby. Check them out on sale or the high seas.
Lucky you, the Dynasty Warrior series has a whole genre named for that style! Look up the term "musou" to see other games with that gameplay. Off the top of my head you've got Samurai Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, Hyrule Warriors, and Warriors All Stars. Enjoy!
Cool! Thanks! I just thought Musou was a mode in the game
Yeah, Shenmue is prototype Yakuza. It had alot of ideas but is kinda clunky and not really fun to play these days. Yakuza 0 or Like a Dragon is a good place to start if you want brawling, Like a Dragon is turn based but still fun. As for other brawling games, Sleeping Dogs is under-rated. Dark Messiah features a system where you can grab people and kick them around. Takes a bit to get use too.
For Musou, I've played a few Koei games. The One Piece Warriors series is great for all the unique characters and no filler story. 3 and 4 are good places to start. Attack on Titan 2 is a secret love because slicing necks with 6 foot long katanas never gets old. There was the Berserk one that has cutscenes from the 1998 anime up to the Eclipse. That ends with them getting on the boat. There's Bladestorm I tried to get into, couldn't really. There was also Arslan which I likewise found boring. The warriors orochi and nintendo games I have no experience with.
If you want a game that was developed with that style of combat, but isn't a HUGE WARTIME BATTLEFIELD STRATEGY sort of thing, Fate/Samurai Remnant is pretty good, and doesn't require extensive knowledge of its franchise to understand the plot. If you've played Persona 5, Persona 5 Strikers is a spinoff sequel that goes that route in gameplay while still maintaining P5's stealthy approach in dungeon exploration.
Thank you!! Will check it out
Have you played the gundam DW games? I know the third one works really well on the RPCS3 (PS3) emulator
I’ve seen those but never played them. I should check it out.
