$2 trillion discovered to be unaccounted for. Next day, the tallest building in the country is suddenly destroyed in a terrorist attack. It wasn't the beginning of the end of the American Empire, it was the beginning of the end of the American Republic. The empire is still going strong because no one will do jack shit against it.
Are you suggesting that they planned both the disclosure and the attacks? Otherwise, if the disclosure was unplanned, it would suggest that they had the attack at the ready but 'on hold' until they needed to distract from something. It seems to me that something like 9/11 cannot happen, especially as an inside job, without a great deal of preparation.
Frankly, (TW) none of the explanations for an 'inside job' make that much sense. They regularly waste taxpayer money with no accountability, so why commit mass murder to hide something? And as we've seen with Ukraine, it's so easy to propagandize people to go to (proxy) war, they would not even have needed 9/11 to persuade people to invade Iraq, another leading explanation for why there was an 'inside job'.
Iraq was much different. Our own military full on bombed and then occupied it. Iraq was also sold on a "pre-emptive" doctrine where Ukraine is (disingenuously) framed as defensive. Iraq hinged on the ideas that Saddam had WMDs and was harboring terrorists. 9/11 was instrumental in engineering fear about terrorism. The most charitable thing I could reasonably believe about 9/11 is that they knew and let it happen anyway because it was politically useful.
Everyone came together in the days after the attacks
I don't remember it this way. I remember everyone talking about how everyone was coming together, but the reality was paranoia and the pundits waiting for one side or the other to use it as a political football first.
There was certainly a few areas of the country where blacks and whites came together to aggressively and loudly be racist against Muslims. My own was one of them.
The problem is, nobody in any news or media or talking head industry actually left their little urban bubbles. So to them it was all a ruse. But some of us certainly had a brief "My American brother, let us kill the sandniggers" few weeks.
No that was back just before WW1 when you voted in Woodrow Wilson. 9/11 was just a new pivot to get the military money machine printing again.
"He kept us out of the war."

ACKSHALLY the Willis Tower in Chicago was the tallest building in America at the time. You’ve been FACT CHECKED FALSE!!
It's certainly taller now. =(
Post hoc ergo propter hoc. The Pentagon hasn't passed a single fucking audit for three decades. The fuck do they care about money going missing?

The beginning of the end for the post-Vietnam reconstruction of federal credibility, sadly it isn't happening fast enough
Definitely the trigger.
Take a look at What Bin Laden wrote to the "US" and just consider how well it holds up after 12+ years. He even mentioned greenhouse gases.
That was the official beginning of the American Empire.
