He didn't turn it off, it was never turned on. the entire story was a lie. The only time I recall him turning off Starlink was the free service around Kiev because they refused to pay. Then he was forced to turn it back on by the DOD because we totally have a free market in this country.
Yeah, the distinction is huge. Which is why the title says Ukraine was prevented from breaking TOS rather than anything being switched off. Ukraine asked for more coverage so they could do something they weren't allowed to do. In Kiev rules don't apply to the powerful and they assumed it would be the same here. (As bad as the West is about corruption, eastern Europe has it to an art form. It's like comparing your clay cup you made in art in elementary school to fine China.)
That's why I said I don't blame him if he DID turn it off like they imply. It's one thing using a private company as a means of communication, it's another to use their equipment to effectively create munitions.
I've seen this several times now, it's a deliberate propaganda technique.
1. Make huge lying claim that triggers emotions.
2. In a few days it's realized it's a lie but it sorta resembles what really happened.
3. You continue with the strong emotional hysteria of the original lie with the new milder facts.
Sounds like the start of the COVID pandemic. Doctors dying from contact with patient zero. Young, healthy people were photographed dropping dead in the streets! Then suddenly we're supposed to forget all that happened, but keep thinking it's a scary pandemic where everyone was has to wear gasmasks and is afraid to go outside.
And beyond "let's not provoke a nuclear power" an even bigger concern especially to musk would be the consequence of that technology - kessler syndrome. If satellites start getting blown to shit soon enough a debris field will cascade, rendering satellites useless and making space travel much more dangerous.
If I remember right, it's either Russia, China or both that have missiles designed to take out low orbit satellites, like Starlink is.
I don't blame Elon for turning it off so they can't use his system to kamikaze drone Crimea, he doesn't want his business targeted in retaliation.

It's a very deliberate propaganda technique.

Both China and Russia have successfully tested anti-satellite missiles.

It's certainly a MAD situation.
Russians definitely have those, dunno about the Chinese.
