No argument here. I have to assume that it's an attempt to get more people to log in (and create an account if needed) to scrape more data and hope that a few of them subscribe.
I don't think it's going to achieve whatever effect Elon has in mind, unless he's just trying to drive people away.
Itβs starting to feel like Elon just throws out random ideas for changes to keep himself and Twitter itself in the discourse. Like, once a week at least we hear of some new feature. Community notes was a good idea but I think he just got lucky. I imagine his lackey-employees always being too scared of him to say his latest idea is shit.
I noticed this today because I can't use the app due a suspension appeal I have pending. (for over a week now...)
My sin? I replied to Chelsea Clinton's defense of Peter Hotez with something like, "One deep state cretin protects a fellow deep state cretin. How surprising...."
I was instantly suspended for one week.
Elon has a lot of work to do cleaning up his censorship bots because my tweet was tame as fuck.
Yeah I've said far worse things without a suspension. I'm sure you're right that "cretin" did it, but is that really ban worthy? I definitely don't think so and Mr "free speech absolutist" should feel the same....
I see both sides of this choice, it makes sense to turn off the tap to all the leech programs scraping Twitter, but definitely makes it annoying as someone without a Twitter account.
Frankly though I should get one just to support the changes they've made, so I am not really too upset about this decision despite it limiting what I see on Twitter currently.
I will forever be suspended because I spoke out against the troons under the previous regime. Salty because this goes against Elon's proclamation but to be honest, I'm better off
Every instance of Nitter has either broken or will soon break as a result of this change. Archiving websites will also suffer the same fate as Twitter will also be dealing with inactive accounts that the archive sites are using to get around mandatory log in.
Unfortunately for Twitter and fortunately for the rest of us, whenever someone puts up a roadblock, we'll just route around it.
Are they insane? Universal visibility is pretty much the most important thing Twitter offers its users. Seriously, so many of the people who post there do so because it's the easiest way to reach large audiences.
This is an incredibly stupid. It'd better be a (very) temporary emergency measure like they claim or they are in real trouble.
Well that will save me time wasted browsing Twitter threads.
It's an incredibly stupid change & needs to be reversed.
People need to be able to link Twitter outside of Twitter in other places like reddit, here, etc.
Trying to force people to sign up to use a site is a terrible move & huge asshole move. Not even Youtube does that.

Quote: "Temporary emergency measure. We were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users!" - Elon Musk, Jun 30.
There is nothing more permanent than a temporary measure.
Hopefully it's not "two weeks to stop the spread".
Think of it like the "special military operation" in Ukraine.

That's weird because I go hard every day shitting on libs.
One thing you need to watch out for is keywords. So if you had just typed "cret1n" or ππ£ππ₯ππ probably nothing would have happened.
Also generally good policy to avoid name calling & any content in general that is "I'm angry & want to vent & lash out".

Between Twitter making this change and reddit getting rid of third party apps, I wonder which is going to be the bigger mistake

Very annoying for us with banned Twitter accounts that Elon has yet to unban like he promised he would.

When they implement a road block, we'll just route around it.

Which is why I use thread reader, and then archive it.
at least you don't have to have a phone number to register now
If that african american faggot won't reinstate my banned account then he's never getting me back.
