My sister thinks that way. My Mom is religious and doesn't agree with all the LGBT crap, but if someone brought a gay or trans friend to my mom's house for dinner, my mom would treat them with respect just like everyone else. She wouldn't try to talk them out of it. She wouldn't even broach the subject.
But that's not good enough for my sister. In her eyes, our Mom is no different from someonewho openly hates gay people.
I’m a Christian and I’m like your mom. Unless they wanted to have a theological discussion I wouldn’t bring it up. One time I was asked what I thought of gay marriage and I said as a Christian marriage is between a man and a woman but I’m not trying to stop gays from marrying. I was called hateful
My libshit brother brings up "muh Christians" every time we visit. My mother would humor him and try to be understanding; meanwhile, I go in the opposite direction and become a pitch-black nihilist to crush his spirit.

And they do it because it works. Because right-wingers are obsessed with 'proving' that they are 'not bigoted', 'not hateful' and 'not racist'.
When in my view, the correct course is to either mock the person who did it or go on the attack and shame the person for making such claims.
See you gotta get out of that mindset. We need to openly condemn this shit now more than ever.
