A union is a parasitic entity grafted onto an existing corporation, this is how it's always been. Aside from like the great depression, the majority of unions were because of grifters wanting to leech instead of raise working conditions.
In this case Nintendo has also been giving more attention to "diversity" so they are pushing for even more money and power.
I do think unions COULD be a fix if a corporation becomes huge and a monopoly, like Walmart or Amazon or whatever, but trying to unionize in a white collar industry like game development when there's literally hundreds of thousands of people willing to line up and take your place is such a stupid fucking idea. The churn is high, but it also keeps faces fresh.
With unionization this means shit workers will forever be stuck in a corporation and the corporation would not be able to get rid of them.
The only thing that really affects monopolies is when the government steps in and breaks them apart, and they only do that when they want to gain greater influence in that area. The government is a monopoly on deadly force after all.
The problem with unions are those that typically organize a union are almost never actually interested in working for the employees to get a more fair deal. They then also end up protecting bad employees making firing an awful employee difficult and expensive. Making a union a leach both on the employees and the company that employees them. If you could guarantee that union leadership was ran by moral people chances are things would be fine, strikes would be rare, and pay/ working conditions would be fair. Unfortunately you can’t guarantee it and it also can create an attitude of “my union rep will get me out of doing something” despite it being in the contract.
A skilled employees best option if they aren’t happy with their pay or working condition is to bring it up with management, and if nothing is done do the difficult task of finding new employment.
Exactly, unions are essentially miniature forms of government where the fuckers who run the unions are always taking their "share" off the top. They only do things to "benefit" the union if it gets THEM more money. Unions have no check on their power, no alternative branch that can audit them when they become big and lazy like corporations and governments do. Unions just add more fucking red tape to an already shitty situation.
Like if the union was organized exclusively by people working at the place unionizing it has a better chance of not being corrupt in the short term. But eventually someone is going to win a rep election based on popularity and be one of the most corrupt people there. It’s something that should be dissolved frequently. But if the company is so badly managed that the only way for fair wages and safe working conditions can be guaranteed by the entire staff threatening to quit there are some serious other problems
A union only works in a merchant prince feudal guild environment.
"I need a teacher, so I'll go over to the teacher's union, and get one". Not "I hire a teacher, and then they become part of one of a half-dozen unions". The union trains, teaches, apprentices, and organizes everything. A proper guild. A guild that, should it stop producing quality product (workers), is cast to the wayside.

Yeah, it's a catch-22 because governments that break monopolies apart are usually the ones RESPONSIBLE for creating it (hi Section 230).

Unions are only necessary in a monopolized environment. If that happens, there have already been multiple failures.
