Truth is, they don't want guns to be banned. As with the Russian Revolutionary Socialists, and the German National Socialists, they just want their particular street thugs to have the weapons. They Fabian Socialists (AKA Neo-Liberals) want civilians to be disarmed generally because they control the institutions. The Progressives only control some institutions, and can get away with more than enough political violence without firearms, so they go along with gun bans for the moment.
Instead, what they'd rather have is civilian licensed militia system where fully-automatic weapons can be given to their specific political allies, while denied to everyone else.
California and New York residents, who I presume is the majority of their audience, will be shocked when they can’t buy a firearm for any number of reasons.
