It was in the works for about 5 months from what I read
This is all starting to resemble the consolidation of news media. Not a good thing.
Yep.
It also means that all of these smaller acquisitions will reflect the top-down culture from the corporate monoliths that purchased them.
Was just about to post this. I don't love all these companies merging up, but so far they aren't buying up anything I care about playing. It's just a consolidation of live service games. I do hope they don't get too big and start using TPM to push other games off in favor of their own.
Hits a bit closer to home for me. Gearbox bought Perfect World Entertainment/Cryptic last month. I play their Neverwinter MMORPG.
Yeah, I start to think at some point they go after the smaller devs. At least more so than they have already.
PWE still do Star Trek Online?
AFAIK yea
I’m strangely a bit more optimistic about the Activision buy-out, as Activision was consolidating everything into Call of Duty development, so there is a small chance that old IPs will be brought back under Microsoft. Based on COD Vanguard, I don’t think the acquisition is going to make Activision Blizzard any worse compared to the direction they have already been going.
Yeah, my thought at the time was really that they can't exactly make them worse. Still don't really have hope of anything good, but it's better than nothing but COD.
I'd say RIP, but then Bungie did already release Destiny 2. So... Re-RIP?
For a meager $3.6bil. People wanted to act like they were clever when I said Bungie was not doing well after the Activision split, with their scripted "well ahkshually" and "source?" responses, and look what happened. They openly advocated for a terrorist movement, lost most of their competent developers, and opted to hire diversity and inclusion officers instead of competent staff. No major studio that is successful is going to allow themselves to get bought out for under four billion dollars.
Like Bizarre Creations, leaving Microsoft was the worst decision Bungie has ever made.
"Source?"
"Have you played Destiny?"
Tis the season of acquisitions it seems. Who's next?
I'm waiting for Amazon to buy EA. Wait til your cat sees this lootbox.
Halo is shit. Destiny is shit. Don't care.
Why?
I would guess they maybe don't want Microsoft to be able to create a monopoly on console-exclusive major FPS series with both CoD and Halo (plus Overwatch, though I wouldn't put it in the same bracket) without having their own response.
Why Bungie? Were there not better options?
