The case was eventually thrown out, just not immediately at that moment. The judge patiently waited several days for the jury to return a verdict, then promptly ignored it and declared a mistrial with prejudice anyway.

Buying a gun on behalf of someone underaged and holding onto it until they are old enough for ownership to be transferred is 100% legal. It's called a trust and that can be established purely based on an oral agreement even if the exact legal verbiage was never used.
