I finished the books in Spring of last year and I started reading them partly because someone recommended them to me after I finished Song of Ice and Fire books and I also knew that Amazon was doing a show and at that point I was already jaded about book adaptations.
I was talking to a friend over the holidays and him and his wife told me they watched a few episodes and couldn't take it anymore. I didn't even know in the show it has Moraine and Siuane in some sort of relationship. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I see morons online who defend it since it is mentioned they were pillow friends in the books but in the books they both end up marrying men (which I'm sure they won't include in the show).
Honestly it really makes me sad that Wheel of Time has had such success (at least according to Amazon) and the usual suspects are praising it like crazy. It was a major red flag for me when the showrunner said in his first interview that there will be lots of lgbt representation and that the show is about Moraine (she isn't even in half the books). In all 14 books pillow friends isn't something they really do a deep dive into at all but I guess that doesn't matter.
I got into a debate in the comment section of one of the youtubers I like who was disappointed in WOT and a guy was saying how it follows the spirit of the book and it was great. To his credit he at least respected where I was coming from when I said I am a book purist and from everything I have heard the showrunner has made too many changes I don't care about.
I just don't get it, the books had women in power and people of different races once they leave Two Rivers. I've seen some people online compare book readers who don't like the show to people who didn't like that Tom Bombadil wasn't in the Lord of the Rings. Too bad there wasn't someone like Christopher Tolkein to defend Wheel of Time.
The bastardization of these stories isn’t the result of incompetence or just them misguidedly shoving their Marxist politics into an existing story, destruction is their endgame. Existing properties only serve as an avenue for these people to subvert them and insert their politics. It’s not about telling a story, it’s not even really about convincing or converting people to their politics, it’s all about destroying something that normal people loved.
They want to tear down anything that exists simply because people like it, they might not even realize they’re doing it consciously but the result is the same. It’s the same principle as modern art and modern architecture; they want to infect the imagination so that people have nowhere to escape to, just the ugly grey concrete globohomo reality of the twenty first century.
Yea that’s true. Honestly wish they would just stop adapting anything older. Adapt the new garbage that wins Hugo awards
Yeah. no point in them doing that though, they can’t destroy something when it was shit from the beginning.
Hugo awards are already infested with that crap. No use in infesting your own shriveled up husk.
I think a lot of these writers are mad that their own shitty creations never took off. None of these people wanted to be "adapters". They wanted to write big original stories that "change the world". But their stories suck, and no one wants to read them let alone pay for them.
So they get jobs adapting the great works of other writers, and then they use established IP to tell garbage stories. When someone challenges this nonsense, these assholes immediately pull out the "gotta make changes for television" card. It's bullshit. They're only making changes to assuage their own narcissism.
It's all so tiresome isn't it? Of course that's by design. I mostly watch anime now.
I generally read and watch stuff pre 2014. When I go to my local used book store I always get at least ten books from the sci-fi/fantasy section. So many older books that I couldn’t finish in a lifetime
Yes, there is a treasure trove of older literary works thankfully. It's nice to collect paper copies as well. Especially as our world becomes more digital, and more censured.
With tv/films though the selection is much more limited which is why I eventually transitioned to anime. Honestly I used to think anime somehow had less depth than regular film but happily I was mistaken.
I’ve been getting into anime more and more.
Are there any particular ones you've enjoyed so far?
Sword Art Online, Death Note (original), Trigun, Robotech, Fist of the North Star, and some others. Are there any good anime streaming services?
Some bearded pegleg types down at the harbour mentioned 9anime.to, just make sure ye have a decent adblock says I, I mean, they said.
Thank you kindly matey
Watch Code Geass
You can thank me later.
What service is it on?
The Robotech novels are amazing. Not sure if they are still in print though.
My older brother had them and I read some as a kid.
Not fantasy but me recommend you (y'all) the game Alien: Isolation, that is not only an old school type story but a beautifully retro-futuristic sci fi in all ways possible. Also is is actually scary.

SO much better than Ridley Scott's pseudo-prequels.
Thanks!
The thing that REALLY confuses me.
Peter Jackson and The Lord of the Rings. True to the books and extremely succesful.
Harry Potter movies. True to the books and extremely successful.
Game of Thrones. When true to the books, groundbreakingly popular and successful.
New Dune movie, very close (closer than previous movie or miniseries) to the book, and widely praised.
For Hollywood, the smart fucking thing should be to get producers and directors who love the source material and want a respectful and true adaption. The path is clear--we've seen it time and time again--love the source, make lots of cash. Instead we get shithead hack writers who think they can write something better, that the original is horribly flawed, and they're going to subvert our expectations.
You know what the Wheel of Time lead's greatest claim to fame is? He was a failure on Survivor. That's his fucking claim to fame. Oh, and he wrote for Agents of SHIELD capeshit. But yeah, he can "fix" Robert Jordan's writing.
We are in the stupidest timeline.
We stopped bulling faggots and trannies. That's where things went wrong.
And you would think Cowboy Bepop should serve as a lesson. I would’ve told that showrunner for WOT that if you want to write your own story then do it we hired you to adapt Wheel of Time
Next season spoiler: Rand comes out as trans and gets pegged by Moraine, while he denounces the evils of ThePatriarchy.
Anyone criticizing the series will be branded a misogynist nazi.
Unfortunately the show seems successful despite pissing on the source material. This is the worse thing, the low standards of the average viewer will lead to even more crappy adaptations.
I've only seen it mentioned here and once or twice on reddit's front page where the usual tattoo/piercing/poison colored freaks made a post on it. Really, Amazon's a shit studio and their works are garbage. When you can't even get word of mouth reliably often from your target audience or haters, then you're too boring to fuck. Amazon Studios is the pretentious art major who coasted through school on daddy's money and on her back until they basically told her quit or graduate, and she quit.
I was looking forward to the show. Turns out it was hot vomit.
I see now that the director, rafe, was making stupid woke comments during the development of the show - it was never going to be good.
My main issue with the Moiraine Siuane relationship is that even though it is implied in the books it's such a minute detail it's the kind of thing you SHOULD skip in order to simplify the show. Instead they expound upon it just to be SJWs.
And they both fall in love with men and get married which I feel will be taken out. Plus pillow friends seems like something done when they are young and they grow out of it.
Has the showrunner explained why? Or is it the usual modern day reasons?
