All these new restrictions being rolled out across Europe and NA in December couldn't possibly be a simple power grab, conveniently timed because they expect fewer people to be out protesting in winter.

Didn't you see the good news? Pfizer is working on a new 3-dose jab for the omicron variant. They say you should still get the booster now, though.
Data from South Africa seem to indicate it is very contagious and nearly harmless. Yet world leaders and the media went into another round of elevated mass hysteria.
Anyone with a brain knows WuFlu is not going away, so since a strain or another will be circulating anyway, you'd want that strain to be Omicron : mild symptoms, few and shorter hospital stays, very few deaths.
All mesure of testing, vax mandates and quarantines pathetically failed at stopping whatever "variant du jour" from getting in a country. Yet there is a persistent narrative about preventing the spread of any new variant with the same mesures that failed 3 times already everywhere, as if it ever worked.
So let's destroy the world to save people from an admittedly mild variant of a cold. I think it's more let's destroy the world <insert whatever excuse we can here>.

They walked it back because there were literally a million people in the streets protesting it. They were always going to bring it back: they waited for winter because they're expecting fewer and smaller protests in the colder weather.
