It all goes back to the zoeypost and gjoni basically saying that his ex got caught cheating on him with 5 different guys (that he knew about, she was the village bicycle), threads were made on /v/ speculating who they were, shitposters ran with it and started digging, people figured out she got positive coverage from some of them (big sticking point where they claim we said REVIEWS!, no, positive coverage, yes of her shitty depression quest game)
Honestly, i remember ignoring the threads for the first day and then peeking in because holy shit they were reaching bump limit within minutes when people really started cooking, and then people started asking questions, and then game journalists circled the wagons and wrote hitpiece after hitpiece, and then it really took off, and then luggage lad (moot) banned discussion, AND THEN IT CAME OUT HE WAS TRYING TO GET INTO THE PANTS OF A GAWKER EMPLOYEE THAT DEFINITELY HAD A VESTED INTEREST IN SHUTTING US DOWN. And then KIA was started, and then people discovered 8chan, and the floodgates to twitter opened. And thats about all i remember from the early days, they were fucking wild.
And people making cats out of the hashtag graphs, and the hangouts with retards like king of pol/jim, good, cozy times, even if pol was a grifting retard. And a whole slew of other minor e-celebs i forget the names of on both sides
Dude the moment all the gaming sites releasing the articles "Gamer are dead" on the same day I know those piece of shit journalist were complotting.
Initially I thought there is some mistakes in hiring when low quality articles and feminism related articles keep popping up written by that one trash writer, but then gamergate happen and only then I realize they're actual group with strong network trying to shove feminism into gaming. No wonder the bias in their articles were strong, it have hidden agenda behind.
The "Gamers are Dead; Gamers are Over" hitpiece authored by Leigh Alexander is actually inspired by Adrienne Shaw's dissertation paper called "The Gamer Must Die". Shaw is a feminist that's a contributing member to a think tank called DiGRA, who also promoted Anita Sarkeesian works.
The funniest thing is, this wasn't even the initial motivation or goal.
All we initially wanted was for Kotaku and Polygon to stop spotlighting games made by their friends, hookups and roommates. And then we started looking to who was covering what, and the more we looked, the more corruption we uncovered. We got slandered as misogynistic, racist 'dudebros'. Every news outlet parroted this narrative, and we couldn't understand why. And then we read, and we learned all about their Marxist agenda.
And now they will be fighting us for as long as we live.
Gamergate really unintentionally struck the weakest chain link on the whole operation. Games journalists are just journalists who weren't good enough to get paid to bitch about what they really wanted to, and the whole operation got sloppy because "It's just videogames, no one is going to pay attention"
It was influence peddlers looking for a score; they got caught, and suddenly we were attacked by a political vanguard that tried to divide and conquer everyone who played video games.
I just wanted them to leave my video games alone man.
I didn't think this would result in a war for the preservation of Western culture, a presidency, a defense of election integrity, and an uphill fight against extremists to keep them from indoctrinating our children and easily malleable.

I miss when a mediocre game would be put out, the most it would say is "Don't shoot up innocent villagers" and that was that, some tech demo with decently fun gameplay and a bunch of assholes on the mic. Since then game studios have been infiltrated and try their hardest to spite the people who want to throw money at them.
