That's right. It's important to remember that the Olympics are just another form of propaganda at this point. This is no way indicative of the actual condition of the country.

Yep - even getting kicked out of a restaurant because they don't want to serve non-Japs (and my Japanese sucks, so I understand) -- they're very polite about it.

I'm just worried that, especially in their collectivist culture where most people just go along to get along, it won't matter what traditional values the majority actually believe if the politicians and corporations decide differently. It's like in America, surveys consistently show the population leans right or holds America-First beliefs, but we can fuck right off because the elites are in control.
