I'm 40 now and have been collecting comic books and baseball/football/hockey cards since I was about 9. I'm sure most of you have heard how sports cards have been booming since Covid started and I was wondering if this was a hobby that could be taken over by the woke mafia like comic books. It is a hobby that is enjoyed by a large percentage of guys so that is one target. I am almost waiting for the headline telling me that baseball cards are "problematic".

Probably just a matter of time, if it's somewhat profitable a grifter will get involved somehow.
The only predictor is how popular it is within mainstream consciousness. The nature and content of the hobby is irrelevant, it's just there to be used as a vector to spread their disease.
They'll try to invade everything under the sun. Whether they will be successful is another matter.
So far they haven't fucked with RC aircraft. Probably because it's too expensive and takes too much skill.
Lots of regular assholes though.
Same with ham radio.
"The tests are too hard!!! The equipment is too expensive!!! Reeeeeee!!!"
I passed the online sample test cold, but I refuse to get into a licensed hobby on principle.
Man, i member being kinda interested in giving it a try back when I was in highschool, but it seemed like the only HAM enthusiasts were like, 50+ year olds
I think that, the $$, and frankly, how uncool it'd be for highschool me to get into (who didn't want to be more uncool than he already was!) Turned me off of getting into it ?
The stuff seems interesting though
Got my FAA certs for RC. Active member of Monroe, La AMA Club.
Yeah, those are the regular assholes I was talking about. "Hey, you can't fly that here. You can only fly at a club. No, we're not accepting new members. If we were, there'd be a $100 initiation fee, and a year's probation before you can fly (but you still get to pay dues), if we don't blackball you (in which case you don't get your money back). Also the field's only open 4 hours a week, 2 of which are during working hours. And more senior members get priority at the field. But we expect you to mow the lawn. Sucker,
I just fly wherever I can.
Not paranoid, just give them time to think of a way it can be problematic and they'll start pushing it. But it's one of those things that's probably difficult to ruin. No one is going to buy TCGs with fat feminists on them and women's sports are a joke.
Good point. I mean they have WNBA cards but I haven’t seen anyone buying them
They already ruined sports cards when they took the gum out of the packages.
Ha! You know sometimes I’ll come across packs from 80s and 90s with the gum in them and I still chew it. Or rather eat it since it is hardened.
Oh, it was always that hard, trust me. It's just how it was.
I didn't say it was great gum.
Canadian ration packs of the early 80s included boil-in-bag stuff (Magic PantryFreddyChef) along with other stuff, including tubes of spread for the horrible crackers. The cheese spread was off limits at the time, because of a tainted batch that dated to something like 1979 or some crap. This held true the entire four years I was in cadets.
I often wonder if that cheese ban has ever been lifted.
The stuff was meant to be able to be stored for a very long time ...
Probably more fair to assume all hobbies will come under attack and try to figure out where the vulnerabilities in the community lie and what defenses the community might be able to shore up to withstand the attack.
I'll put it this way: genuinely shocked it hasn't happened yet
Geez. They poison everything. Did anyone push back?
And I've noticed in the media that the word "consumer" has started to replace the word "customer".
Anything can be attacked/taken over by them, your worries aren’t unfounded. Always be aware of increasing bad actors, share only with people you trust and pick your fights wisely.
The key is to not let your worries about subversion take over your love of the hobby. I’d gotten to the point where I questioned if I ever loved video games in the first place, as I started to spend more time defending them than enjoying them.
I went through the Witcher games for the first time (CD Projekt Red has been pretty openly subverted, so I’m not too worried about sharing this) and that re-ignited my love. I’ve been trying to work on my backlog since, and I’m just so happy to see all the passion old games had. It inspires me to create my own stuff, since a lot of older games didn’t have to be too complex like modern games.
TLDR: Yes, you should be aware of attacks, but remember to enjoy your hobby, that’s why we call it a hobby! :)
Yea. I get you with gaming. The main game I play now is modded Skyrim.
I mean I suppose they could. I wouldn't really be paranoid about it. There's nothing you can do about it. Just pick and choose the stuff you want out of it. I sort of had to accept and adapt to be able to get my head straight and move on. The key is adapt, not totally give up.
Examples:
-I was in to sports (yeah I know a very unpopular thing around here), I've dropped a lot of that. The good thing is I was always more into the competition instead of the idol worship. I did spend a lot of money on it though before. I've just adapted to different levels. College baseball for example is high quality in some places, accessible, and very cheap. Low wokeness. I may try to do similar with hockey, but that being a much more live sport we will see. If anything I can just go watch high school hockey for free. -Games had already changed for me. About 2015ish they just stared falling off a cliff. The good news is I already have enough games for about the rest of my life anyway. I don't care about FPS and resolution and modern tech anyway. -I barely watch TV anymore, and when I do it's old stuff. Movies on occasion. I've got a big library of stuff already, enough that I can rewatch and almost forget about it in between. Although TV wasn't really a sacrifice as I was never into that to begin with.
I was into sports cards for a short bit. It's cool but not for me. It's gotten expensive and very gambly, and I don't have a gambler's personality. I do have a small collection of some decent stuff, but none of it has shot up in value. It seems the crazy value stuff is very heavily focused on a tiny handful of players with extreme rarity where the big money people just get in a bidding war. While from all the stuff above costing me way less and giving me a lot of freed up money, I've been investing in myself (learning things) and in real estate.
I watch older stuff mostly and have lots of books. I collect more for the fun of it. I would have to be in serious debt to sell my cards or comic books. I’ll pass them on to kids or nephews/nieces. Real estate isn’t a bad investment. I’m mainly investing in stocks and crypto at the moment.
The sports themselves have become incredibly pozzed, so I wouldn’t doubt it.
I can't see how. Unless they force female players into the sets.
But still, you can just throw them in the garbage with all the duplicate cards.
The male characters will be soy creatures instead of masculine men doing masculine shit, and the women will be unattractive and not in sexy poses. Same shit they did with games.
No you're not. The most likely reason they've ignored it so far is because there are better targets.
Well, with how professional sports has been going, I'm surprised the cards business is still big. Ratings are down, so is merchandise sales.
Collect the card, bigot!
