Nah they needed the story to make it seem possible. Even if a significant proportion of people know the stories are BS, there are some that are sadly too gullible or lazy to know/check if they have been lied to.
This was my big takeaway. All the surveys say trust in media is at an all time low, but the last year and change showed us the most compliant and gullible public in our history. I guess fear trumps everything.
